15 Short Walks In Northumberland – Vivienne Crow

A set of steps drops you onto a riverside path that winds its way along the edge of the estuary. On reaching a lane in Alnmouth, turn right. At a T-junction, go right again – along Marine Road. As this road bends left, turn right as if to enter the car park for Alnmouth Village Golf Club, but then, just before the parking area itself, follow the signposted path to the right. Passing between the beach and the links course, a path leads back to the car park.
Don’t forget to drop onto the beach – from either this path or the car park – for the opportunity to feel the sand between your toes! As well as the National Park, there are two National Landscapes in the county: the North Pennines and the Northumberland Coast. To shorten At the roundabout just before Waypoint 5, carry straight on. As The Wynd bends left, continue straight ahead along Northumberland Street and through the main part of the village.
Reaching the seafront, rejoin the main route by turning left along Marine Road. This cuts about 15min off the walk. Golfing first This walk passes two golf clubs. The nine-hole links course in the village is the oldest of its type in England, having been established in 1869 by the Scottish golfer Mungo Park. The 18-hole course at Foxton Hall opened in 1931. Although the two were once part of the same club, the links course is now run by Alnmouth Village Golf Club while the newer course is part of Alnmouth Golf Club.
