It brushes the bottom of his mattress, soaking the sheet. But his backpack is still hanging from his desk chair, and the comics on the top shelf of his small bookcase are still dry. Jake nudges Granny beside him, who seems to be unaware. “Look, it’s stopped.” She gives his hand a reassuring squeeze. “See, no need to worry about what we’ll do. We’re gonna be just fine.

The water will probably be gone in the morning.” Jake isn’t so sure, but even if she is mistaken, there’s nothing either of them can do about it. Now that the water has stopped rising, Jake doesn’t feel the same compulsion to watch it as he had earlier. Instead, he shifts his attention to the window and the storm outside.

While he’d been staring at the rising water inside the house, outside, morning has finally come. The sky has lightened, turning to the sickly gray-green of a daytime storm. The clouds overhead cover them like a heavy blanket, stretching as far as Jake can see. Unfortunately, the water outside is just as high as the water inside. Jake watches in disbelief as a couch floats by, then a car. He spots occasional pieces of furniture pulled along by the current. Inevitably, he can’t see them for very long.

The water pulls them either away or down until they disappear. Jake can only see the roofs of a few houses and a couple of second stories like the one they’re sheltering in. The rest are almost completely submerged. Only the very tips of their sloped roofs are exposed. Water rushes past the house, causing the walls to shudder. Sometimes, a larger wave hits the side of the house, and the walls shake even more.

Jake has the feeling that he’s floating in a raging river. Tree branches bend under its force. The fierce wind rips off what few leaves remain. Rain continues to pour down, beating against the window. The horrible sound echoes from somewhere deeper in the storm. He cranes his neck to look for the source. “Granny, look!” he shouts, jamming his finger against the cold glass of the window. “What is it?” she asks, then gasps as she spots it. A house is drifting toward them, half submerged in the water.

A storm large enough to pick up a house? He shakes his head in disbelief. With the speed of the water, it seems like it should be moving faster. Instead, Jake feels like it merely drifts toward them. Or maybe it’s so big that he can’t quite tell how fast it’s moving. The house suddenly seems to stall in the water, one of the sides buckling in.
