Alien Passion – Hannah Haze

No longer field upon field of golden wheat, and the rainbow colours of fruits and vegetables, cattle grazing in paddocks, and droids working the land. Now there is nothing but blackened fields of ash as far as the eye can see, only the skeletons of leafless trees remaining.
“What happened here?” Emma asks in horror. We skim low over a field of ash and see a crowd of droids attempting to plough through the dust. “I do not know,” I say. “It was not always like this.” “What used to be here?” “Farms,” I say, swallowing. “Agricultural land.” “It looks like a war zone,” Emma says. “Are we close to where the fighting was?” “No. Something else has happened here.” I peer out at the wasteland, certain that the Grytons here must be starving.
Our shuttle hovers over more scorched earth and then comes to rest beside my cousin’s dwelling. He was a wealthy Alpha with plenty of land and the size of his glittering mansion reflects this, although I note the metal is tarnished and the great gates that surround the dwelling broken and left unrepaired. As the doors of our shuttle open, air from these lands comes whistling inside and it is thick with dust and ash.
Emma shields her face with her arm and coughs. Perhaps it was not wise to stop here but what is done is done. I climb out of my seat and out into the fading light. My cousin hovers by the door and greets me. I remember him as a great jovial Alpha with the countenance of a bear and I have to stifle a gasp at his radically altered appearance. He stands crooked, leaning on a stick, and his frame is withered, his face thin. He has the eyes of someone fading away.
I wonder if he is ill. Yet despite this, he greets me with a cheeriness I remember. “Ahhh young Tor. You are most welcome indeed. You and your guests,” he adds as my friends, my Omega and her pet emerge from our shuttle and a hint of curiosity sparks in his eyes. “Please follow me.”
We walk with him through the broken gates and step inside the mansion. “The clan has just finished eating I’m afraid,” he tells me, and I wonder if he is telling me the truth or whether there is not enough food to spare for so many guests. The northern Alphas live in clans and work their farms together. In my cousin’s clan there will be his Omega and their children, if they have any, but many Beta families too.
“It’s okay,” I tell him, “we have brought our own.”

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Finally, a massive thanks to Mr D and my sister for your support, and to my children for their inspiring imaginations. 1kitap1.com/en Foreword This story is set on the planet Astia, in a universe different to our own. Here there are different types of people — Alphas, Omegas and Betas — and the creatures are different, yet similar — shirds, molves and stigs for example. 1kitap1.com/en S Chapter 1 — Emma pace.
Black and cold and desolate. Yet beautiful. Always beautiful. The darkness penetrates against the infinite number of stars. Each unique. Each different. Each light a new spectrum of colour. The way it radiates or sparkles, glows or shines, extraordinary. I’ve missed this. I hadn’t known quite how much until the spaceship quit its fierce shaking, buffeted by the air as it left the atmosphere of the planet I’ve been stranded on for over half a year, and entered the calm of space.
Now we glide; smooth and serene. I close my eyes, fling back my head, and sigh. A strange sense of relief floods my veins and the baby in my belly, only moments ago kicking as I bounced in my chair, lulled to sleep and stilled.
