All I Need To Hear – Anne Prado

She lifted her head, messy waves covering half of her sleepy face. Waking after a whole night in economy sitting shouldn’t have made someone look this attractive. Her cheeks were even rosier than before, like- ly from rubbing her face on his shoulder. Elliot smiled at the thought. “Cheers to your first meal in Ireland.” He raised his plastic coffee cup to Lu. “I promise it gets much, much better.” Lu raised her cup as well, her easy laugh filling him with relief that his joke had landed. “Are you saying this isn’t the traditional Irish breakfast?”
“Nah.” He looked down at their sorry trays. “That’s just hard, tasteless bread.” “Maybe it won’t be so bad if we add this…” She flipped a small plastic container back and forth. “…undetermined spread.” One daring look from her was enough for Elliot to find the courage to give it a go as well.
At their first bite, their eyes locked in suspense until they couldn’t stop laughing. It tasted even worse than expected. And still, it felt amazing, as everything did with Lu. She made a face after taking a sip from her cup. “Did you know we’re not supposed to have coffee from a plane?” He matched her grimace but drank his anyway. Dealing with Katrina would require all the caffeine he could get his hands on, even if it came from less-than-honorable sources.
Allegedly. “Where did you hear this?” “I shouldn’t say heard—more like read.” Lu pushed her cup aside. “It’s easy to get into reading everything about anything when you can’t hear that well.” “Or when you’re not as distracted by noise as the rest of us,” Elliot sup- posed. “I wonder what that would be like.”
“Not bad, to be honest.” Lu smiled. “I mean, I do wish everyone spoke with captions, but there are advantages to hearing less. I’m a sound sleeper, for one.” He swallowed hard, wondering where they’d be sleeping in the next few days. Could they have been booked at the same lodge? He could think of worse things. But the worst-case scenario would be for Lu to become un- comfortable around him.

If mental health counselor Luisa Victoria Mendes had known she was hard-of-hearing, she never would’ve chosen a listening profession. She nodded on reflex before looking down at her notes. The important thing was for her client to feel validated and understood. Even if she couldn’t quite understand what his grocery list had to do with the fight he had with his girlfriend. Tangential speech, she scribbled, then crossed it out. How could she know it was tangential—as in, unrelated to what he said before?
