“You didn’t do anything.” “The truth, Théoden. The truth.” “Catalina.” The way he says my name sends shivers through my entire body. “I promise you didn’t do anything you should be ashamed of. You had fun. Nothing wrong with that.” “My singing?” He won’t look me in the eye.

Hellfire. “That bad?” If I could shrink into myself any further, I would disappear. “Believe me,” he snorts. “There were worse singers last night.” “That means I was so bad I could be their queen!” I groan. “No, Tess reigns supreme for sure. The Grand Empress of Bad Karaoke.” “I don’t remember her even going up there.”

I scratch the side of my neck. “How do I not remember?” “Well, it’s probably because you were too busy dancing.” Nooooooooooo. Hellfire and broomsticks. I stop moving. Stop breathing. Stop eating, my fork mid-way up to my lips. “Please,” I wheeze, my eye twitches. “Please tell me you’re joking right now.” Theo smirks, bringing his cup to his lips, shaking his head. “Afraid not.” I put the fork down on my plate, hands immediately cover my mouth.

HORROR. The only thing worse than me singing in public, is me dancing in public. And so drunk I don’t remember it. “Theo,” I whisper. “I don’t remember dancing at all.” Theo stifles a laugh. “Cate -” “I can’t show my face on this island ever again.” The last time I went dancing was right after Derek broke up with me.

Eve and Tommy insisted on me ditching the Cheeto stained pajamas I had been in for three days straight and go out with them. What started as us simply having dinner and drinks turned into us at a club dancing until two in the morning. And not just dancing. I was practically giving lap dances to anyone who gave me a second glance. If I danced last night just a fraction of the way I did with Eve and Tommy, then I would have to book myself a ticket back to Seattle immediately.

“Cate?” Theo brings me back. “It was just dancing.” “No such thing as,” I use air quotes, “just dancing, with me.”

This is for you. 1kitap1.com/en Chapter One “Cate!” “Yes?” I look up from the book I am reading and see a man standing just inside the entrance of the coffee shop I frequent in downtown Seattle.

He smiles and rushes toward me, unraveling the black scarf that strangles his neck. He must have the wrong Cate. His green eyes are dancing, and slightly panicked if I am picking up on his vibe right. He sits across from me, his knees knocking against the legs of the table we are apparently now sharing.

“There you are!” He reclines in his chair, swiping a few rebellious strands of black hair out of his tan face. I look over my shoulder before setting my book on the table, my finger still holding my place. “I’m sorry, do we know each other?” “Here’s the thing, Cate,” he leans forward.

“May I call you Cate?” “Uh…” “Great!” He pats the top of my hand and quickly continues before I can respond. “The thing is, Cate, I told my brother I couldn’t grab lunch with him today because I was out with my girlfriend. Well, you see, he just spotted me outside and insisted on coming inside to meet said girlfriend.” I blink twice and whisper, “Why are you telling me this, Mr. …?”

“Theo.” He extends his hand and I politely, although reluctantly shake it. “Theo Bennett. Now the funny part of the story is I don’t actually have a girlfriend. I just told my family I did so they’d get off my back for a while.” My eyes widen in realization, and I shake my head.
