They had gone down some, when they’d been messaging. Silly exchanges about nothing; discussions that had made him feel at home. He’d been able to trust her to give him a break from the stress in his life, to get him out of his own head by letting her into it.

Until like the song said, it wasn’t enough. But when she’d attempted to push past the superficial, when he needed someone to do that, exactly that, what had he done? He was the one who had stuck them here, leaving things hanging like George RR Martin never writing the last book of Game of Thrones. The TV series didn’t count. The ending had sucked. It was up to him to get them out of this place; move them forward. He didn’t realize his face must be showing all of it until her smile faded, falling into something wistful, then melancholy, and landing on disdain.

“Just drive,” she said. Because she wasn’t doing this; sitting here with eyes locked to his, wondering why he didn’t lean over and kiss her already. She wasn’t hung up on the guy having to make the first move but with Tim, it would have to be that way. Their short, weird history dictated it. He jerked his head away, his nod a heavy drop of his chin, and she left him to focus on practicing — watching but not watching.

This had been a bad suggestion. It should be Nate here doing some brother-bonding time, not her. Because whatever had caused his horror when that song had come up — he wanted her out of his head. Either for the same reason he’d stopped messaging her back in March, or because he liked her and clearly couldn’t deal with that. If he liked her, how long had he liked her?

She gave a rapid little rattle of her head, like a horse trying to shake off a fly, grateful he was too engrossed in sending the Mustang stuttering about to see it. He’d probably think it was a reaction to his struggles with the car, anyway. After a few minutes, he was getting a little better, the starts and stops not quite as jarring. It was going to take more than this, though, and it was getting late.
