He pursed his lips. “We can feed them half-truths. Let them know we’re safe, no more. That’s better than them charging out trying to help us and ending up in the crossfire.” She nodded, pushing down a stab of guilt. She shoved that aside and forced a bit more cheer into her tone.

“So, any chance you want to do that racing game? I’ve still got tokens.” He grinned, obviously appreciating the shift away from gloom. “Absolutely. Then I want to see if they’d let me try that VR contrap- tion in the corner.” They polished off the fries quickly, sipping cider between bites.

Willow made a small, self-satisfied noise. “Arcade fries taste better than they should. Probably loaded with extra salt.” She flicked a crumb off her jeans. Harry’s hand found hers under the table. His warmth calmed her swirling thoughts for just a moment. “I love that we finally said it,” he murmured. “Feels like something big off my chest.” She managed a lopsided grin. “Yeah. Big step. Also about time.” They rose and shuffled toward the back section where a set of sleek racing simulators waited, each with a plastic seat and steering wheel.

Neon stripes along the edges flashed in intense cycles. Willow hopped into the left seat while Harry climbed into the right. She fed a few tokens into the slot. A mechanical voice chimed, “Select your track.” She scrolled left, picking an Alpine highway. The digital lights flashed, counting them in.

On-screen, their avatars revved engines. Then they were off, twisting the wheels, jamming the brake pedals, ignoring the outside racket. Willow found herself leaning forward as she skidded around cor- ners. Harry attempted a sneaky pit maneuver, but she managed to outdrive him, at least for the first lap. She let a gleeful whoop slip when she crossed the finish line three seconds ahead. He mock-sulked, “You are a demon at racing.

Should I be con- cerned about your driving when we head home?” She pointed a finger at him. “My truck is older than dirt, so I promise I won’t be drifting corners on real roads.” She caught a flick- er of bright red across the wide glass door at the far side of the ar- cade. She paused, still gripping the racing wheel, gaze locked on that bizarre flash outside. Harry followed her angle, eyebrows tightening. Another flicker of crimson light glowed at the edge of a second-story balcony across the street.

She spotted a silhouette moving behind it. Then it vanished. He pressed his palm lightly on her back. “Willow, that might not be as random as we want it to be. Could be local weirdness. Or it could be a Regime signal.” Her gut twisted. She rummaged for her phone. “We heard ru- mors last week about them coordinating sleepers in the city. Could be them.

A jogger felt the snap of electricity in her ears, and the fine hair on her arms was standing on end. She looked up toward the sky expecting to see storm clouds, but there were only the first streaks of color against a blue back- ground, typical of an early morning in Austin, Texas. The sun was just beginning to lighten the broad Texas sky over the popular coffee shop, Radio East. The coffee shop was a popular spot for witches and wizards living nearby and was protected by several wards.

Strange things had been happening in the small city lately, and there was a buzz in the magical world, putting everyone on edge. Even the owner had long since gone home, sure the proper- ty was safe from intruders. The hangout was set in what had been a more industrial part of town but was quickly being gentrified by millennials moving into the area.

Dogs sporting bandannas at brand new local restaurants and baby carriages were replacing small auto body shops, hair- dressers and used appliance stores. There were warm café lights strung everywhere outside the cof- fee shop that could make anyone look better, but they were long since turned off for the night.
