Her face felt as if it had caught fire. But Zane’s face cleared, and, of all things, he even chuckled. “Guess it works out well for everyone, then.” And as she had thought before, this man was a puzzle to understand. She could never guess how he was going to react. 1kitap1.com/en Chapter 15 hy he kept thinking of the basket social from the night before, Zane couldn’t have said.

The event had turned out much better than he’d thought it would. Rosalind’s supper had been a good buy. Well, maybe not so much the meal. Raw potatoes weren’t his favorite side dish, especially when they were covered in burnt butter, but eating two servings of them had put a gleam in her eyes to replace the hurt from Bense’s ridiculous comments. Besides, he couldn’t let her taste them. She would have been mortified that her dish had gone so awry. It was her company that had been the good end of the bargain.

They had visited all evening, jumping from one subject to the next without pause. They’d talked about Lincoln and politics and farming and—gracious, he couldn’t even remember half of what they’d said. Byron had eventually fallen asleep on Rosalind’s lap. If there was one memory from the evening that had stuck with him, it was of her holding his sleeping son, both of them lit by the light of the moon.

Now he swung Byron into the wagon before he turned to take Audrey from Ma’s arms. Ma had that familiar crease between her eyes, the look she always got on Sunday mornings when she was trying get everyone out the door in their good Sunday clothes. She ran her hand down Audrey’s hair, smoothing it, and then she adjusted the ribbon on Audrey’s dress.

Zane cracked a smile. “She’s fine, Ma.” She didn’t listen to him, of course.
