Nelia would wait while Grandmama folded the bread over and over, then stretched it out into the shape of a leaf. Later Nelia would get to slash the dough eight times and spread the sugar water over the top of it. Once placed into the oven Grandmama would murmur into the light: “Almost threw my uncle in there as well, but… mercy… he was my brother’s father.” Back to the present, Nelia watched the young boy dance closer to his drunken father, then dance back.

A dirty flask appeared in the father’s hands, its contents giving him the final courage his rage needed to beat his son into a pulp. Nelia swallowed back a scream, forcing her eyes to stay open, her feet at the ready to pull the boy away. The minute the boy’s first swing missed his father, three large shapes appeared on the street. Clearly men, though Nelia was uncertain if they were friend or foe.

Before the light even hit the strangers to the party, the boy tried another swipe at his father, his attention probably so focused on surviving that he didn’t see the newcomers to the show. It would have been a perfect punch to the right side of the father’s head, were it not for the strong arm that reached out and blocked the punch entirely. The boy stood stunned. The father staggered back. The sharp whip of the night air whistled through the silent street.

Two large arms reached from around the father and pulled him out of the light of the lamppost, where Nelia could barely see him or the other man. Though it didn’t much matter: Prince Pokoj’s voice had her turning back towards the boy. She turned her head so quickly her temple grazed the corner of the building. The pain was sharp, exact, but left quickly enough with some rubbing.

Once she was certain she wouldn’t fall from disorientation, Nelia crept forward as a frog would. She felt a great need within her to hear what the Prince was saying. Why he was there and what would he do? Where would the grace lie? Insight into peaceful and pure justice would be something she could ponder the rest of her life.

“Are you all right? Do you hurt anywhere, Dantruel?” Prince Pokoj asked gently, his hand placed firmly on the boy’s shoulders.

If there is any resemblance to real names, it was not done on purpose. The characters, places and events are fiction. There are several words from different languages from around the world woven into the story. That was done on purpose. While the author understand that language is rich and complex and direct translation from one language to another doesn’t always fit correctly, she thought it would add more to the characters if the reader could hear them speak another language.

The author sincerely hopes the reader will allow her the fun of using other languages mixed in. even if perhaps the grammar of those languages isn’t always perfect. A lexicon of the meanings and which language the words are from is located at the end of the book. Each room was more exquisite than the last. With each item more beautiful than the one before, she lost her ability to feign disinterest. Instead, her eyes widened more and her open mouth hung lower. When she had first arrived at the palace, she had been determined not to look around in awe. She didn’t want to seem uncouth.

Mother had done a good job of instilling a minimum amount of pride in her. The last thing she wished was to give the impression that she never saw fine things in her life. Perhaps her faded dress screamed that gold chairs should impress her, but Nelia was single-minded in not giving the palace staff any reason to pity her.
