Honestly? Robbie suffers by comparison. I try to make my lips tip back up at Robbie, but yes, I am overwhelmed. I’m jetlagged and high-strung and even though I grew up in a nice house in a nice neighborhood with nice things, there is a world of difference between being affluent in the United States and an actual peer of the realm in England. I’m saved from replying when Will opens the door for me, extending his hand in such a classic display of chivalry that I think— It’s happened.

I’m in the time loop. I am Elizabeth Bennet, and my very own Mr. Darcy is holding out his hand to me. If he does the hand flex, I will not survive it. “Don’t worry,” he whispers, tugging me next to him as I step down. “I’m not worried,” I lie. The way he lifts his eyebrows tells me he knows it, too. “Robs,” he calls over his shoulder. “You’ll help Giles get the luggage and help Lexi down?”

“I’m pregnant, not impaired,” Lexi grumbles from inside the car. “Sure. You go on ahead. I know everyone’s eager to meet their new duchess.” Robbie winks at me, and I stumble over my feet. Duchess. Mrs. Lemur. Same thing. “You’re doing great,” Will murmurs, because of course he’s disrespectful enough to see through my bravado. “I’m always great,” I snap. Maybe I should have eaten the in-flight meal. I don’t know what time it is here—a million o’clock probably, based on how long this day has been— but I’m feeling edgy and my stomach is growling and I think maybe time travel makes you hungry.

His lips don’t move, but there’s a smile in Will’s gunmetal gray eyes, and I have to remind myself not to get lost in them. They look just like the brooding skies over Northumberland, and I have no idea how I’m going to endure the next month. I force myself to tear my eyes away, but as soon as I do, I know it’s a mistake.

I love you. 1kitap1.com/en AUTHOR’S NOTE READING IS AN act of empathy. It’s feeling someone else’s heart thrashing against your ribcage. It’s letting your life smudge and fade at the edges as you tumble willingly into someone else’s.

Which makes reading love stories a bit like falling in love. And we crave love stories because, in a very real way, it’s what we’re made for— To love and be loved. We ache for this. We burn for it. But the love stories will only take us so far. They’re only an echo and a shadow. They’re proof and promise of something real, but love stories can never give us what our hearts burn for.

They’ll never satisfy that hollow, incessant aching in our souls. There’s only one story in the world that can do that. It’s the story of a sovereign God who loved a broken people enough to die for them. Enough to conquer death and come back to life for them. Enough to draw us close and whisper, over and over, I’ve called you by name and you’re mine. You’re precious and honored and I love you {Isaiah 43}. And that is the truth about love stories.

They’re meant to point us to the incandescent, all-consuming love of Jesus.
