Artists N Illustrators – May 2026 – Artists N Illustrators

I have used a combination of Liquitex Soft Body in Cobalt Turquoise, Brilliant Yellow Green and Bright Aqua Green with my Filbert brush. I like to keep some elements a little transparent, so that the spray texture shows through and adds to the layered effect.
I’ve also used a Liquitex Paint Marker in fluorescent pink to add some flowing lines representing abstract foliage. I love how these markers have a translucent effect. ▸ Now I start to add in the white elements. Using a small flat brush, I keep this quite loose and light. Some areas will be left white and for these, I have marked out more defined shapes. For other areas where I will be adding another colour over the top, I have left it more translucent.
I also like to keep some of the background showing through. Wait for the white to dry before adding more colour on top. Still using the flat brush, I start to add in some colour – I’m using mainly Winsor & Newton Cadmium Orange with a touch of Liquitex Gold. The white underneath helps to make these colours pop more, and again this process can be quite loose.
I like to play with the bush strokes and texture here, too. I switch up brushes to my script (or liner) brush and making sure all of the elements underneath are dry, I load my brush well with paint, before carefully pulling it in long, slow strokes to create my sharp, flowing lines. I’ve used Liquitex soft body paints (which flow more easily) in White for the outlines of the tiger and fish, and the ‘connecting’ landscape lines in Brilliant Yellow Green, Bright Aqua Green and Gold.
I’ve also used this brush for the tiger stripes and face details. Using the liner brushes, I’ve added in more foliage around the tiger. This last step for me is about creating a final balance in the composition, making sure I’m happy with the way the colour, shapes and overall composition flow.
Finally, a few sweeps of the Liquitex Fluro marker on the tiger and flowers add an extra pop of colour, and the piece is complete! ▫ Using a flat brush, I start to add in sharp elements in black, including sweeping strokes for branches and some shapes within the body of the tiger. These are typical features of my work, and I love this point where the sharper, flatter colours start to contrast with the softer background elements.
The liner brushes take a bit of practice, I found.
“Distanciation”, 55 x 39 inches, Nitram Charcoal, sanguine & chalk “Bold. Durable. Thick. Chunky. Smooth. Reliable. Nitram Charcoal is that perfect kind of tool that when your fingers grab one of those exquisite, velvety black sticks, you know you can confidently be as aggressive or as subtle as your work asks you to be.
Need to smash in a large zone of deep black? Any of the Nitram large sticks or Bloc De Saule will get it done. Working on a delicate linear passage or a subtle modelling transition? Sharpen one of those Bâtons Épais and you have the thinnest, most delicate line or hatching, or keep it blunt and go for a bold linear statement.
I need my tools to ebb and flow with me, and with Nitram there are no limits. It is simply the best and most consistent charcoal around.” ~ Shane Wolf Shane Wolf is one of the rare masters of figurative art who upholds the millennia-long tradition of working uniquely from life, as long as it takes, to create his works (no digital or photographic references are ever used). The lively exchanges between the models and the artist are essential to his art, allowing him to constantly evolve and invent new ways of exploring the power and beauty of the human form, and always Nude.
