One of my favourites, Riverstone 1.7 (1988–2025), projects a quiet presence and feels resolved as a sculptural piece. The round form swirls with a subtle raised edge and the pale translucent ultramarine glaze blushes with red, recalling one forms Scarp (1983), held in the permanent collection of the Christchurch Art Gallery. Danish-born Malene Laugesen lit interior spaces sparsely dotted with furniture and the occasional object, although homecoming (2025) looks back at a house lit from within.

Undoubtedly sky (2025) is the most compelling and the most successful. light-bathed interior suggests a human presence, now departed. A feeling of loneliness, absence and presence lingers. The distinctive angled skylight, projecting an intense blue haze into the interior space, is instantly recognisable at the University of Canterbury in the late 1970s. The composition the space where Laugesen completed her MFA just a few years ago. A meditative dream-like atmosphere is transporting nature indoors. A tiny cup UHÁHFWHGLQWKHVN\OLJKWRIsky hints at domestic activity as I contemplate a pond?

Bold, expressively painted landscapes by Rebecca J Spence illustrate a clear understanding of brushstrokes. Her choice of landscape subjects, including vistas of Lyttelton Harbour and Barrys Bay in Akaroa, may not be new but the moody, slightly threatening tone of Night Walk (2025), for example, captures achieved through transparent washes and dribbles of paint in the river. Trained at Dunedin School of Art, own unique power, giving potency and force to her imagery. Where we meet may be a catchy title, but this is a show which allows independently.
