“Birdie has been busy, so we haven’t gotten to talk for more than a second. I wonder if it’s bad etiquette to offer someone a job at the place they work.” “It’s fine,” Dirk said. “It would be hard to find her when she’s not here.” “Anything else I can get you two?”

Birdie asked, coming over. “Hey, Meg. You want some food?” “No, thanks.” “We’re good,” Brian said. “Can you sit for a minute?” “Sure can.” She sat next to Dirk and nudged him, causing him to move closer to the window. “I can’t afford to sit too close to Dirk. Tips aren’t what they used to be.” Dirk smiled and gave her a pencil.

She tucked it into her apron. “I swear, I don’t know how you do that. What can I do for you?” “Meg’s bakery is going to need someone who can bake.” Her face lit up, and she pushed back her frizzy hair. “I bake.” “Are you interested?” “Possibly. I’m off in an hour. Can I meet you at the library to talk?” “We’ll be there.” Birdie stood and took a deep breath. “I knew today was going to be a good one.”

She walked back to the kitchen with a bounce in her step. Dirk took a sip of soda. “I think you made her day.” “It looks that way.” Dirk frowned. “You really think a library-bakery combo is going to cover Meg’s bills?” Brian glanced at me.

“It’s hard to say. I hope it works out. I’ve never tried to make money with a library, so it’s anyone’s guess.” Normally, that kind of comment would send me spiraling. But Brian’s knee was brushing mine, and suddenly I couldn’t remember how money even worked. 1kitap1.com/en Chapter 9 don’t think it was Valery,” I said as I placed a stick of butter into a bowl.

“She brought up her dad being in prison without any urging.” I opened another stick. It was hard to open without getting it on my fingers, and the greasy texture made me feel gross. “Now microwave it a bit so it won’t be hard to mix,” Brian told me.

“What’s a bit?” “Twenty seconds.” I opened the microwave and placed the bowl inside. I closed the door and stared at it. I’d used a microwave before, but not often. My house didn’t have one. I pushed the two and the zero twice and frowned when nothing happened. Brian’s mouth twitched. “You have to push start.” “Right.”

stood in the dark, musty building and tried not to gag. This was supposed to be a library? My brother had officially lost his mind. Of course, he wasn’t the one who had to make it work. That was my job. Lucky me. “Hello?” I called just to hear if my voice would echo. I cringed when it did. It bounced off the cracked plaster walls, like a ghost whispering, Turn around and run. Not a bad idea, really. “Why are you yelling?”

Felix asked, walking into the room like he had no care in the world. Why should he care that he’d just sentenced me to financial ruin? “This place is awful,” I said. “But it won’t be when it’s done,” he replied, ever the optimist when it was someone else’s problem. My father had died six weeks ago and left every cent of his multimillion- dollar estate to my brother Felix, with one maddening instruction: Take care of your sister.

As if I were eight and not thirty-six. Felix’s idea of taking care of me was to buy me this awful building on Main Street and announce to the town that I was opening a library. Why a library? Because I liked to read. That was the entire reason.

I’d asked him to give me the money he would be spending so I could go to school and maybe get a house. That sounded sensible to me. I had a degree, but it was pretty much useless. Felix said I needed to “build something of my own” and that I’d “feel more fulfilled this way.” That was why I was here, standing on creaking floorboards and smelling mold.

“He’ll be here any minute,” Felix said, checking his watch. “I hope you’ll be polite, Megara.” I rolled my eyes. “My issue isn’t with the man. My issue is with your entire plan.” “This can work. Muddy Creek’s library has been running for years, thanks to Mr. Hooper. I’m confident he can make it work here as well. That man knows what he’s doing.” “Mr. Hooper is the guy you’re paying to teach me Library 101?” “Yes, he’s been incredibly successful with his own library.

I saw it, and it’s beautiful. You would love it.” I had serious doubts. “How am I supposed to make money doing this?” “I’ll cover expenses for the first three years—taxes, utilities, everything,” Felix said, as if that solved the problem forever. “That should give you time to get on your feet.” I was about to argue again when Felix moved to the front window. “There’s a car.
