In spite of Billy Graham, this is not a ‘Western idea’. It is the object of Korean Christians for Korea. When Christianity came to Korea, the Japanese came, too, only a little later. After 1905 the Japanese occupying power wanted to eradicate the Korean language and to ‘Japanologize’ Korean culture. During the era of Japanese oppression, the young Christian church put itself on the side of the people.

In Seoul, in the Pagoda Park, stands the monument commemorating the revolt against the Japanese of 1919, in which lay Christians were prominently involved. Consequently, white people are not hated in Korea, and Christianity does not count as a religion of white people, as it does, for example, in China and Japan. The missionary initiative of the Christian church in Korea is accompanied by a quite unusual prayer movement. During the evangelizations, most of the churches in Seoul were full to overflowing every morning with people who had come to pray.

There are prayer services at sunrise on the hills all over the country. Last winter the Catholic cathedral of Seoul and the square in which it stands were full every morning with people who had come to pray for Christians who were in prison. The passion of prayer can be sensed everywhere, in churches, seminaries, and private houses. It is a power which convinces the people, and a liberating force of resistance against the political mistrust. ‘In Korea there is no political freedom’; that can be heard and seen everywhere.

When I left Seoul on 13 March, the last free newspaper, Dong- A, had been brought under government control, under dramatic circumstances—dismissals, hunger strikes, popular protests, and mass arrests. Dong-A, ‘the voice of Asia’, had lost all its advertisements the previous year, under government pressure. Afterwards private people had supported the paper with advertisements incorporating poems and epigrams.

Praise for A Broad Place “Jürgen Moltmann introduces the reader into the broad space of his inspiring life. . . . The famed theologian answers all the questions about his life and work in an amazingly open, fair and irenic way. . . . A lucid book, opening on wider spheres.” —Zeitzeichen, Berlin— “In no other of his books does Moltmann manifest his existential Jesus- spirituality as directly as in this autobiography, composed as an expression of his belief. . . . His theology here appears.

. . as the self-expression of a pious soul who consciously chooses against the nihilistic signature of the modern age.” —Friedrich Wilhelm Graf, Neue Zürcher Zeitung— “The global theological player par excellence takes the reader with him on many theological forays and speaking trips around the world. . . . This autobiography confirms the unbroken relevance and contemporaneity of Moltmann’s turn from fear-driven and confining theologies in support of ‘the reign of God and his righteousness on the earth.’” —Zeitschrift für die Evangelische Landeskirche— 1kitap1.com/en 1kitap1.com/en A BROAD PLACE An Autobiography All rights reserved.
