Dust bowl intermodal terminals The growth of container operations and the proliferation of modern, efficient container stackers and retrievers has made establishing a satellite intermodal terminal relatively easy for freight compa- nies. These short to medium distance ter- minals are becoming a popular way to gain efficient and reliable access to major ports such as the Port of Botany in New South Wales (NSW) [Refer Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development Research Report No. 139 ‘Why short-haul intermodal rail services succeed’].

Such ‘pop up’ intermodal terminals are usually established using re-purposed locations. These terminals are built to a budget and therefore infrastructure such as hard stand areas are simply compacted earth. Kelso NSW, on the main western line just to the east of Bathurst, has two such rail-served intermodal terminals. Grainforce Logistics Off the Up main line is a grain bunker siding that has been converted to an intermodal terminal and is currently operated by Grainforce Logistics.

The grain bunker itself is still active. The initial configuration of this siding was the result of a rationalisation of facili- ties in November 1994, reducing the sid- ing to a single loop with an additional set of points provided at the up end to access Clyde Engineering’s facilities. This siding is serviced three times a week by Southern Shorthaul Railroad’s ‘Kelso Flyer’.

A kick back siding has been installed at the Up end, which helps the crews to shunt container wagons around the available hard stand manoeuvring area. To facilitate the stripping and back loading of containers, Grainforce Logistics utilise two Hyster container stacker retrievers: a 45-31 CH and 46-41LS CH. Frame B1 controls points at the Up end of the yard and Frame E controls points at the Down end.

Commonwealth sidings Built in February 1943 to service Defence Department stores, these sidings connected multiple sheds, with the line branching off the down mainline.
