Away To Me – Patricia B McConnell

“I just worry when she runs outside, you know. She’s so tiny, she could get squished like a bug out here.” She kissed Tillie on the top of her head and said that she hoped I was doing okay. “Just let me know if there’s anything Tom or I could do—I know you must miss George an awful lot.” I started to say something about Cisco, but we were interrupted by Tom coming out of the kennels with a black shepherd on a leash beside him.
Joan nodded to me and said, “I’ll just run Tillie back inside while you talk to Tom.” The shepherd sat quietly as the two of them stopped in front of me, turning his head toward Tom as if awaiting the next instruction. “Hey, Maddie. Good to see you.” “Hey, Tom, good to see you too,” I answered. I would’ve given him a hug, but felt it would interfere with his work with the shepherd.
“Poor Tillie. How is she doing?” “Okay, although she wasn’t for a couple of days. My aunt is going to take her in a few days when she gets back into town. She’ll be a great home for Tillie, so that’s a relief.” Whew. “Uh, hey, Tom, I know you’re busy, but I’m desperate to find this shepherd I told you about. I was hoping you’d have some ideas about where to look next.” “Makes no sense, Maddie. The word would have gone out in a minute if a working K9 was lost, and I’d have heard about it the same day.
You said you found him by the road outside Milwaukee?” “Not me, but a shelter volunteer. I took him out of the shelter to foster him, and that’s when he was stolen.” “Jesus. Someone sure wants that dog back.” Tom raised and lowered his yellow and black Brewers cap, snugging it over his hair. “Sure you want to get involved?” “I am involved. My house was broken into and Bo Peep was poisoned, for God’s sake.” I could hear my voice rising. I took a breath. “I’m going to find that dog, Tom.
I’m not giving up.” I stood silent for a moment, looking into Tom’s face; his eyes shaded from the sun by his cap. “Please, Tom, any ideas?
