iatrogenesis (ieˌatrohˈjenisis) additional problems caused by treatment or diagnostic procedures. An iatrogenic disorder is a condition caused by medical personnel or procedures or through exposure to a healthcare facility. ICU see intensive care unit. id (id) that part of the personality, containing the instinctive drives, which leads to gratification of primitive needs and which exists in the unconscious. idea (ieˈdiə) a mental impression or conception.

Autochthonous i. a strange idea that comes into the mind in some unaccountable way, but is not a hallucination. Compulsive i. an idea that persists despite reason and will and that drives one to action, usually inappropriate. Dominant i. a morbid or other impression that controls or colours every action and thought. Fixed i. a persistent morbid impression or belief that cannot be changed by reason.

I. of reference the incorrect idea that the words and actions of others refer to one’s self, or the projection of the causes of one’s own imaginary difficulties upon someone else. identical (ieˈdentikəl) exactly alike. I. twins twins of the same sex developing from a single fertilised ovum. identification (ieˌdentəfəˈkayshən) a mental mechanism by which an individual adopts the attitudes and ideas of another, often admired, person.

identity (ieˈdentətee) part of the ‘self-concept’ of being distinguishable and separate from others and who they are in relation to their group or society. I. crisis a period of uncertainty and confusion concerning a person’s sense of self and role in society. Occurs most often in the transition between the ileum and the rectum; ileorectal anastomosis. ileorectal (ˌileeohˈrekt’l) referring to the ileum and rectum. I. anastomosis ileoproctostomy. ileosigmoidostomy (ileeoh- sigmoydostəmee) an operation carried out when most of the colon has to be removed and an anastomosis is made between the ileum and the sigmoid colon.
