A Forever Thing – Coco Sow

I know I should stop this and tell him off, but I physically can’t. He goes for the kill when he runs his thumb over my lower lip. We are so close to each other, his lips barely grazing mine, and I can smell his breath—a mix of peppermint and alcohol—all over me, intoxicating me. I wonder if it’s possible to get drunk this way, if it’s possible to be so consumed by someone that you literally can’t breathe or think about anything else except them.
I close my eyes, waiting for him to finally press his lips against mine and end my suffering. His lips are getting closer, and even though all I can hear at the moment is my heart beating, I hear his tiny moan. His lips are now touching mine when suddenly his phone rings, signaling he has a new text message. I immediately pull away and open my eyes, remembering who I’m with and where I am after being so far gone from reality for the last couple of minutes.
Relief and disappointment overtake my body, and when I look at him, he’s already staring at me intently before taking his phone, not breaking eye contact with me. When he opens his phone, I see it’s a text message from Sara. My heart drops. Did I almost kiss someone who’s in a relationship?
I feel guilty because I didn’t think about her at all. All that mattered in that moment was us, his touch, and the way he made me feel. But now that the moment is over, all I feel is resentment for JJ. He’s still looking at me with a guilty expression as well, and he opens his mouth to say something, but another text message comes through.
He groans and finally answers her. I roll my eyes and completely turn to my side, facing the wall instead of him. Don’t cry, Malika. Don’t you dare cry right now. I refuse to let any tears drop in his presence. What did I expect? I’m such a fucking idiot.

1kitap1.com/en Chapter 1 Jeremy I remember the first time I met Malika Washington very clearly. I was nine years old, so my memories from that time are pretty hazy, but not that day—no, that day is quite simply unforgettable. It was a hot summer day. Not hot like “let’s get in the pool and eat a bowl of ice cream to cool down,” no—not at all. More like hot in the sense that only shoving your head in an air conditioner would make you feel slightly better.
That same morning, I remember going downstairs and seeing my mom make pancakes for me like she does every weekend. “Good morning, honey!” my mom said in her usual perky and happy voice. “So hot,” I replied as I walked over and sat on my favorite stool in the kitchen, still half-asleep. She chuckled and placed the pancakes that were ready on my plate, pouring some syrup on top. “I know, baby. Why don’t we go play outside a little bit?
