Perhaps wanting her to know how true that was made Jake decide to step back and watch her swing into action as she silently accepted the lead role in this life-or-death drama. There was no time for other investigations or a consultation with an interventional cardiologist from a bigger hospital. If the fluid wasn’t removed from the chest, Steve was going to go into irreversible shock and die.

Moving him to Theatre wasn’t an option either, but resuscitation areas were well set up to become impromptu operating theatres. A sterile tray was set up and Isla scrubbed her hands at the sink before getting gowned, gloved and masked. Jake helped Laura prep the skin and drape Steve’s chest, keeping a close eye on all the vital signs being monitored.

Isla held the plastic-wrapped ultrasound probe in one hand and a syringe full of local anaesthetic in the other. Jake could see that she was putting some local into the space around the heart as well, to ensure that the final part of this procedure where the fluid was sucked out and a drain left in situ was as painless as possible. Her hand was steady as she inserted the cannula, her gaze fixed on the monitor to navigate past an artery that was a pulsing red blotch on the screen very close to the moving shape of the beating heart.

He could see the tip of the needle clearly as it entered the narrow fluid-filled space surrounding the wall of the heart. He saw the way her eyes narrowed as she adjusted the lens of her focus to no more than the task she had in front of her and, just for a split second, Jake was captured by the way she was radiating her determination to succeed with her entire body.

The intensity of that focus and skill, along with such an obvious determination to succeed was… …well, it was bone-meltingly sexy as far as he was concerned, that was what it was. It was also a very unprofessional thought to enter his head, but it was becoming disturbingly familiar when the aftermath of that ill-advised kiss should have worn off by now. Yes, it had happened, but Isla had seemed just as happy as he’d been to pretend it hadn’t happened. Possibly even happier.

He’d done his best to put it out of sight and out of mind. But it simply wasn’t working, dammit. It was only for the tiniest blink in time but Jake knew he was nowhere near forgetting about it. Thanks to its frequent appearance, he could also be sure that he would be spending more time thinking about it in the very near future.

Wondering who had actually initiated the kiss.

The one thing they do have in common? The chemistry simmering between them… Both available now! 1kitap1.com/en Dear Reader, When I was growing up, my summer holidays were always spent in Central Otago, a region of New Zealand that I adore. As an adult, I very much looked forward to summer holidays on the Coromandel Peninsula, another part of my homeland that I’m now very much attached to. I have such fond memories of picnics at Sailors Grave beach and the walk to the idyllic Cathedral Cove farther north on the peninsula.

It’s been a joy to set a duet in this part of New Zealand and revisit those times. My hospital in Thames where Jake, Isla and Sam all work in the emergency department is fictional, but my daughter did build a magnificent teepee out of driftwood exactly where Arlo does on Sailors Grave beach. I really did have a little blue penguin swim between my legs at Cathedral Cove.

And, oh yes…the heroine in Book 1 of my Coastside ER duet—Isla—is a writer as well as being a doctor, so there’s a bit of reality woven in there, as well.
