“It’s just fun getting someone who hasn’t known the touch of a woman to squirm.” ‘Hasn’t known the touch of a woman!?’ Dying right then and there would have been less embarrassing. “Hey!” Noah couldn’t help but shout. “What makes you think that?” Malinora leaned in and mockingly sniffed him. “I can smell the desperation.” ‘Bitch.’ Noah wanted to hate her, but that smile was so disarming.

Before he could come up with a clever remark, she tapped the button and made it go away. “Let’s go see the main attraction!” And off he was pulled towards another box. This box was surrounded by people who were admiring it. Noah tried to look in but could barely fit with the crowd. “It’s hard to believe they are so powerful,” one person said with a face pushed up against the glass like a child.

“They’re so simple and plain though, it’s hard to believe these are the famed Artemis Gloves.” “It’s not all about looks.” “Yeah, You would know about that.” “Oh, my god. Stop it you guys!” Noah was finally able to get past the crowd to peer in the box, and what greeted him on the same type of red velvet pillow were two gloves, or at least they looked that way. They were fingerless gloves made up of some sort of woven material that glimmered gold. As he leaned in, they did look plain, but beautiful in such a simple way.

“Are you sure that’s what those are?” another student mocked, and the chittering of laughter filled the air. “Let’s go! More to see!” Professor Valya called. As they filed away, Noah smiled at the gloves and put his hand on the glass. “You’re beautiful to me.” “You talk to inanimate things?” Malinora asked with a raised eyebrow.

“Habit from being on the ocean,” Noah said, straightening. “It gets lonely so you talk to things and they become your friends.” “You sir, are a strange Human.” “Thanks.” If anything, Professor Veyla loved her museum. She went from room to room discussing her pieces of history as if they were her children. Most of it was well over Noah’s head. He had learned a bit of the history in school, but not a lot of his education was focused on it as they were all Human there. The students finally arrived in a large room that had chairs lining the wall and enough room for everyone to be spaced out.

Malinora let go of his arm, but of course did not move from his side. “Alright! Time for a quick lesson and then we will begin your aptitude test. So! Let’s do a quiz. You’ve probably heard their names bandied about. There are three known energy sources among the living. What are they?” A hand shot up from a student in the front.

He had thick glasses and a large backpack he had been carrying with him. There was a notebook in his hand. “Yes, Karl?”

The SS Deep Blue, a weathered fishing trawler with about twenty-odd crew, sliced through the waves with a steady hum, its hull streaked with the salt and grime of three months at sea. Noah Foster stood by the side rail, the cold January wind tugging at his dark knitted cap and the hem of his matching heavy peacoat.

His boots scuffed against the deck as he leaned over, a waterproof bag clutched in his hands. Below, the water churned with lively splashes and giggles. Three Mermaids swam alongside the boat, their iridescent tails flashing and flickering in the sunlight as if the ocean’s cold were non-existent. One of them, a red-haired beauty with scales that shimmered like polished ruby, swam closest. Her voice was melodious and teasing as she called up to him. “Noah, you’re too kind to us,” she sang, her green eyes sparkling.

“What will the other fishermen say?”
