She had come there looking for Carter to tell him what she’d had, or, more correctly, hadn’t learned about Gianna Matisse. She found Carter’s interest in the beauty interesting, to say the least. It made her wonder if he was interested in her for security reasons or personal ones. Although Kelsey was married to Knuckles and she loved him, she’d always thought her captain was one fine-ass man.

One that she’d be willing to try if he showed her any attention. Which he hadn’t. But a woman can dream. When Kelsey arrived at Romans, she went to the counter. “What can I get for you, Kelsey?” “Is the Skipper here?” “He’s in his office.” “Thanks,” she said and began making her way through the crowd of sports gamblers to the office. She knocked on the door. “Come!” Kelsey entered the office and found Carter sitting behind his desk.

That is one fine-ass man, she thought, looking at Carter, who was dressed in a midnight-blue, tailored-fit Havana suit. “Hey, Skipper.” “What’s up, Kelsey?” Carter asked and was a little surprised to see her there. “What brings you here?” “I came to see you.” “Really?” “Yes, really,” Kelsey said, sitting in front of his desk. “And why is that?” “You told me you wanted me to look into Gianna Matisse.” Kelsey smiled when Carter sat up a little straighter.

“What did you find out?” “What I found out is that Gianna Matisse is a ghost.” “What does that mean?” “Near as I can tell, before a year or two ago, Gianna Matisse didn’t exist.” “Thanks,” he said, but he was intrigued. Kelsey was surprised by his reaction.

However, it confirmed her suspicion that his interest in Gianna Matisse was personal. It gave her hope that she might have a chance. “Anything else you need me to do for you, Skipper?” “Yeah.” Carter paused. “Discreetly get a picture of her.” He held up one finger. “Discreetly, Kelsey. Ghosts tend to be camera shy.” Kelsey saluted and stood up. “Understood, Skipper.” With that, Kelsey returned to Knuckles’s gambling spot. When she arrived, she looked around until she spotted her.

Channel 4 news anchor Carmen Taylor heard that a friend of hers has died of sudden arrhythmic death syndrome, which is an unexpected death from cardiac arrest that occurs when the heart stops pumping blood, preventing breathing, and depriving the brain of oxygen. Carmen attended the funeral. She had moved back to New York after she filed for divorce from her husband, Marcus Douglas.

Although Carmen loved him, she wanted a divorce because he was never home. That, and she believed that he was having an affair with his law partner, Tiffanie Powers.
