A MURDER IN SPRINGTIME – MARTIN WALKER

If he remembered correctly, there was still a small ball of black truffle sitting in the carton he used to store his eggs, infusing the whites and yolks with its earthy perfume. No sooner had Bruno decided on the menu than he heard Fabien greeting Colette Cantagnac in the anteroom, his manner both respectful and warm as he thanked her for arranging his temporary home.
As Bruno got up and readied himself to greet Fabien, he was amused to witness his executive assistant being clearly charmed by the visiting officer. With Fabien taking Balzac’s usual place in the front passenger seat of the Land Rover, the basset was relegated to the back, from where he couldn’t stick his head out the window and watch the world go by. Bruno made a fuss of the dog as he installed him on the back seat, and once he’d buckled himself in, Fabien stuck his left arm through the gap between the two front seats and started stroking the basset’s soft ears, an action he continued for the whole drive home.
Fabien let out an admiring whistle as Bruno pulled into the courtyard. “Bruno, your place is beautiful. It reminds me of home.” Fabien stepped out of the car and slowly turned in a circle, taking in the plane tree, the potager and the chicken run Bruno and the baron had built over the course of one very long and sweaty summer weekend many years back. “Even your shutters are the same color as my parents’.” Bruno laughed. “Aren’t all the shutters in the Périgord the same shade of blue?”
“Not quite all! You see some rebels with gray ones, and once or twice I’ve even seen green.” He made a face of horror, but it was in jest. “Shocking. I hope you reported them to the style police.”
