A Proposal To Risk Their Friendship – Louise Allen (1)

He lurched towards the bell rope, tugged it and reeled back to stop Melissa getting up. ‘Wait for some help.’ The first maid who arrived recoiled with a shriek and backed out. Then the landlord appeared. ‘What the devil’s happened?’ ‘The couple who were in here attacked us. Where are they now?’
‘Gawd. Looked such a nice pair, too. They’ve gone, sir. Half an hour since. They said you wanted to stay on and finish the dinner and that you’d pay the reckoning when you left, but not to disturb you until you rang.’ He stood surveying the wreckage of the room. ‘I’ll call the Constable, sir.’ ‘Never mind the Constable, they’re long gone. I need a room for myself and—and my wife.’
There was a faint gasp from where Melissa lay at his feet. ‘And the doctor. The best one you have hereabouts. And some men to carry my wife upstairs in a chair. She’s in no state to walk.’ ‘Neither are you, sir,’ the innkeeper said. ‘Meggie! Run for Dr Hardcastle, quick as you can, girl. Billy! Get Edward and Sam. Dorothy? Oh, there you are, girl. Stop gawping. Up to the best bedchamber and run a warming pan between the sheets, then fetch hot water.
We’ll have you both comfortable in a trice, sir, don’t you fret.’ Comfortable? He doubted it. He had a concussion and Melissa probably had, too. Neither of them should fall into a deep sleep, so they needed someone to keep an eye on them, wake them at intervals. And he didn’t trust anyone else to look after Melissa.
Although he had made a pretty poor showing at looking after her so far, Henry thought bitterly, as he dragged himself up the stairs in the wake of Melissa, enthroned on a chair that probably weighed more than she did. ‘They’ve stolen our bags as well,’ he told the landlord as he reached the landing. At least his brain was working well enough to spot that discrepancy in his story.
Unconventional heiresses…full of big ambitions! Friends Verity, Jane, Prue, Melissa and Lucy are unconventional ladies with scandalous yearnings and big ambitions—to be writers, painters, musicians —but the only safe sanctuary to exercise their talents is in one of their family’s turrets! They have no wish to conform and be drawn into society’s marriage mart, unless they can find gentlemen who value and cherish them for who they truly are…and not the size of their dowries!
Read Verity’s story in Least Likely to Marry a Duke Jane’s tale in The Earl’s Marriage Bargain Prue’s journey in A Marquis in Want of a Wife Lucy’s romance in The Earl’s Reluctant Proposal and Melissa’s happy ending in A Proposal to Risk Their Friendship All available now! 1kitap1.com/en Author Note I never thought that when I met Verity Wingate sitting at the bottom of an archaeological excavation, face-to-face with a very polite and very angry duke, that the encounter would lead to a five-book series.
But Verity’s friends, Liberated Ladies all in their own ways, demanded to tell their stories, and this is the fifth and final episode. I hope you enjoy following their sometimes-rocky paths to true love as much as I enjoyed writing them. 1kitap1.com/en LOUISE ALLEN A Proposal to Risk Their Friendship 1kitap1.com/en Louise Allen has been immersing herself in history for as long as she can remember, finding that landscapes and places evoke powerful images of the past.
