I jerk my head around as the door opens, and Axton practically falls into my room, sweat trickling down his temples. Every muscle in my body tenses. All I can think is: Don’t trust Axton. His perfectly pink bottom lip is split. One pant leg is torn, and his knee is scraped. “Have any of you seen Jack?” Axton asks, out of breath.

Iris scoffs. “We’re not telling you. Hello, we’re playing a game. We want to win.” Axton heaves a furious, frustrated sigh. “Have you seen Jack?” Axton tries again, only louder this time, voice frantic. Prescott arches a skeptical brow. “Why are you looking for Jack? He’s your competition.” “At the party, Jack was on the archery turf, and then he wasn’t,” Axton says, a nervous edge creeping into his voice.

“Ford and I looked for him. We searched the entire estate. All fifty-two acres. He wasn’t anywhere. No one has seen him.” Harper and I exchange a nervous glance, and instantly my stomach lines with dread. I can’t tell if Axton is a good actor trying to trick us, or if something is wrong. “No one has seen Jack in hours,” Axton says.

“Jack is missing. He’s gone.” Cold sweat pricks at the back of my neck. Gone. No. “Where’s Ford?” I blurt out. “My room,” Axton says. “In case Jack turns up there.” I grab a pen and paper to leave a note: I went to your room. Meet there. Every bright fourteenth, He by water I don’t put every bright fourteenth or he by water in all capital letters.

Jack knows they’re anagrams and he knows what they mean: Truth Before Everything. Weatherby. All the Liars do. That’s how he’ll be sure I’m the one who left the note. I run down the hall and across the courtyard to Jack and Axton’s room, heart beating in my chest, holding on to hope that Axton is messing with us. When I open the door, Ford stops in his tracks. His eyes dart around, landing on each of us, and a pained expression crosses his face, worry turning to fear.

His blue eyes meet mine. “Jack isn’t with you.” Ford chokes on his words. My heart sinks. “We can’t find him. He’s missing.” There’s a high-pitched ringing in my ears. I pull Ford in, and I can feel my big, strong older cousin start to shake in my arms. I want to cry, but I can’t fall apart. I need to hold it together. Iris says, “How long has it been since you last saw Jack?” Ford glances at his watch.

“Five hours.” Iris’s eyes bug out. “He could be anywhere by now.”
