Her braids were styled in an elegant updo, and she wore a deep red dress that Sean had bought her during their shopping trip. The dress hugged her curves in all the right places, showing off her smooth brown skin in a way that made her feel both powerful and nervous. Tonight, Sean was taking her to dinner with his family.

Not just a date, but a formal introduction to the O’Brien clan. She didn’t know what that meant for their arrangement. Were they still just making a baby together? Or was this something more? Her phone buzzed with a text from Sean: Car is downstairs. Jasmine grabbed her purse and took a deep breath. She’d been sleeping with Sean for over a month now, but meeting his family felt more intimate than anything they’d done in bed. The black car was waiting as promised.

The driver opened the door for her, and she slid in next to Sean, who looked as handsome as ever in a perfectly fitted dark suit. “You look beautiful,” he said, his eyes moving over her with obvious appreciation. “Thanks. I’m nervous,” she admitted. “Why are you introducing me to your family? That wasn’t part of our deal.” Sean’s hand found hers, his fingers warm as they intertwined with her own.

“Things change.” That wasn’t really an answer, but before she could press him, Sean continued, “My family has questions. They’ve noticed me spending time with you. It’s easier to introduce you properly than deal with their speculation.” “What exactly are you telling them? That I’m your surrogate? Your girlfriend? Your employee?” Sean’s thumb traced circles on her palm, a small gesture that sent shivers up her arm.

“I’m telling them you’re important to me. The details are none of their business.” Jasmine wasn’t sure what to make of that. Important how? As the potential mother of his child, or as something more? Their relationship had been shifting lately, becoming less clinical and more… real. The sex wasn’t just baby-making anymore. They spent time together even when she wasn’t ovulating. He called just to hear about her day. “You should know,” Sean continued, his voice lower, “my family can be difficult.

Especially about outsiders.” “Outsiders meaning Black women?” Sean met her eyes directly. “Yes. Some of them are… traditional. Old-school Irish Catholic. But they’ll respect you because I respect you. And if anyone says something inappropriate, we’ll leave immediately.” The car pulled up to a large restaurant with a discreet sign – O’Malley’s.

From the outside, it looked like a regular Irish pub, but when they entered, Jasmine realized it was much more upscale than it appeared.

Her back ached, her scrubs had blood stains from a car crash victim, and her braids were coming loose from the protective bun she’d carefully pinned that morning.

Three car accidents, one gunshot victim, and a kid who’d fallen from a third-story window. Just another Friday night in Brooklyn. “Thompson, can you finish the paperwork on bed four before you go?” Dr. Reid didn’t wait for an answer as he hurried past, already focused on his next patient. Jasmine sighed and nodded. What she really wanted was to go home, peel off her sweaty scrubs, and stand under a hot shower until the water ran cold.

But that wasn’t an option. Not when the hospital was short-staffed and overflowing with weekend emergencies. “Girl, you look dead on your feet,” said Maria, her friend and fellow nurse. “You’ve been here since seven this morning. Go home.” “Just one more patient,” Jasmine said, forcing a smile. “Then I’m out.”

Her phone buzzed in her pocket. Fourth time today. She pulled it out and saw the same number that had been harassing her all week. Student Loan Services. They wanted their money, and they didn’t care that she barely had enough to cover rent. She silenced the call and opened her banking app. The number made her stomach sink: $42.13.

That wouldn’t even cover groceries for the week, let alone help with her mom’s medical bills. Her mother’s cancer had spread faster than anyone expected. The regular treatments weren’t working anymore, and the experimental ones the doctor recommended weren’t covered by insurance. Sixty thousand dollars they wanted.
