Backyard Meat Rabbits For Beginners – Anne McKenzie

Wood to Encourage Tooth Wear Rabbits gnaw on hard objects to wear down their constantly grow- ing teeth. To help the rabbits in their plight (and discourage unwant- ed destruction of wooden panels), freshly cut branches can be pre- sented. Keep in mind that not all wood is safe. Never give rabbits apricot, cherry, avocado, plum, peach, cedar, or pine branches as they are potentially harmful. Rabbits can be safely presented with apple, ash, hazel, pear, poplar, willow, birch, and maple branches. Berry brambles are safe as well.
Many people mistakenly believe that rabbits are low-maintenance animals with short lifespans. The truth is rabbits require a special- ized diet consisting of grass hay, greens, pellets, and treats. With proper care, rabbits can live up to a decade and some large breeds have been known to live longer, but breeders will need to keep a watchful eye on their animals and understand their behaviors. Changes in the rabbits’ eating and pooping behavior can signal health issues that will need veterinary intervention.
Many health and behavioral issues are preventable with proper care and this will answer some questions about rabbit care. What Do I Feed Kits? Kits have very sensitive digestive systems and their needs will change as they grow. For the first three weeks, a kit is dependent on its mother’s milk. At the three-week mark, when kits start to explore, pellet feed can be safely introduced.
It is advisable to feed kits exclu- sively pellets until they are 12 weeks old. Everything a growing kit needs is in the feed and they can suffer from diarrhea if they don’t remain on a strict diet during this period. The doe’s milk and the pellets will provide all the vitamins and minerals kits need to devel- op a healthy body.
Can I Foster a Rabbit With Cow Milk? Absolutely not. Cow milk makes for a poor replacement that can re- sult in kit death. If kits need to be fostered, the best rabbit milk alter- native is kitten formula, goat’s milk, or puppy formula.
