A Widow To Defy The Duke – Eva Shepherd

You’d spend your time consorting with actresses. In other words, living exactly the life you presently do. She released a small sigh. ‘This fighting between those two harpies and me must be very difficult for you,’ he said, misinterpreting her sigh. She signalled to the footman to serve the baked Alaska and to remove her untouched plate. ‘And I don’t think we’ll be getting rid of the scolding sisters any time soon.’ He looked towards the doors through which they had departed.
‘I imagine right now they’ve got their heads together and are plotting their next move. Or perhaps they’ve gone into the garden to collect some newts’ eyes or frogs’ toes so they can cook up a witch’s brew and curse me back to the hell they believe I came from.’ Despite herself Adelaide gave a small smile at the thought of the sisters dancing around a cauldron and reciting incantations under a full moon. ‘It’s where they grew up, they still see it as their family home,’ she said, pulling her face into a more serious expression.
‘But I do hope they don’t intend to stay until the court case is settled. I believe such things can take an age and you’re right, their presence is rather upsetting.’ ‘From the look of all those carriages laden down with trunks, I suspect that is their intention,’ he said, digging his fork into his dessert. Adelaide sighed again. ‘Perhaps until this is settled Joshua and I could move into the Dowager’s Cottage.’
‘No, don’t do that,’ he said with surprising force, the dessert fork clattering into the bowl. ‘Don’t let the spiteful sisters drive you out of your home. You and Joshua have more right to be here than they do.’ He frowned. ‘Leave it up to me. I know exactly how to drive them away and no newt will have to give up its eyes, or frog surrender its toes in the process.’
‘So, are you going to tell me this plan?’ she asked, still contemplating what needed to be done to enable her to move to the cottage as quickly as possible. ‘By morning all will be revealed,’ he said grandly, putting down his fork and waving his arms in the air like a magician about to perform a conjuring trick.
Rakes, Rebels and Rogues A new trilogy from Eva Shepherd! Thomas Hayward, Isaac Radcliff and Sebastian Kingsley are friends from boarding school who found they had a lot in common standing up to their fellow pupils from the aristocratic elite! Thomas was labeled “new money” and shunned because his father was a wealthy industrialist.
Isaac, the son of a duke and his actress mistress, was considered beneath contempt… While Sebastian’s family was riddled with scandal! They’ve all formed a deep disdain for the ton as a result, and it will take three special women to restore their faith in love and Society again…
Look out for all their stories, set in the booming world of Victorian England: Available now Thomas’s story in A Wager to Win the Debutante Isaac’s story in A Widow to Defy the Duke And coming soon Sebastian’s story in A Marriage to Scandalize the Earl 1kitap1.com/en Author Note A Widow to Defy the Duke is the second book in the Rakes, Rebels and Rogues series and features Adelaide FitzWilliam, a young widow who was forced into a marriage for the sake of her family, and Isaac Radcliff, a man who inherits an unwanted dukedom.
Isaac grew up thinking he was the illegitimate son of a duke and an actress and having to deal with the prejudices surrounding both his birth and his mother’s profession. A rebel by nature, instead of feeling any shame, he reveled in shocking anyone who tried to belittle him, including his legitimate half sisters and his father’s young third wife, Adelaide. In Victorian times, social stigma still surrounded people who worked in the theater. It was also not uncommon for aristocratic men, such as Isaac’s father, to have an actress as a mistress.
Even Queen Victoria’s son, the future King Edward, was known to have had affairs with several actresses, the most famous being the celebrated beauty Lillie Langtry. I loved writing this book and delving into the world of the Victorian theater, a world that both intrigued and shocked polite society, and hope you enjoy reading A Widow to Defy the Duke. Isaac’s friend from school Sebastian Kingsley will feature in the third book in the series, with Thomas Hayward making up the trio of rakes, rebels and rogues.
