Well, I think we have a complicated relationship. I clearly like him, and I think he likes me, and heaven knows I’ve stalked him quite a lot. By that, I mean I’ve watched many, many episodes of Hidden Architecture. It’s a good show, and also a great way to hear his voice and look at his face. I still keep thinking about the way we almost-kissed. And the way we broke through the gates, which feels as if it should be awfully symbolic – but maybe I’m overthinking.

Maybe he doesn’t “like” me as such, and almost-kissing me really was a mistake? Like I say, it’s complicated and it’s scrambling my brain thinking about it, so I decide to do something else. I decide to do some more research on Lady Clementine. I decide to do this after watching Marcus on TV, after he’d helped a family find the outline of a bathing pool in their mahoosive garden – much, much further south than we are, so it was clearly warmer down there – and he also helped them find old plans which showed it was actually fed by the sea, so it was tidal, and they restored it and everything.

There were some final shots of their three blonde moppet children splashing around in it, and it made me think of Lady Clemmie, and how she’d had three children in three years. There was a much more sensible gap between the moppet children than a year between each of them, but I’m sure it was still like herding kittens. Isa and Maggie are enough for me, and only in small doses – but I guess if they’re your own children, it’s easier than if they’re someone else’s.

I don’t know. What I do know is there is probably quite a bit I can find out online, anyway, so I pull my laptop over, pour a glass of wine, and keep Marcus on in the background on catch-up. It’s crazy, but hearing his voice makes me feel happy, almost as if he’s in the room with me. I suspect he doesn’t feel that way about me, but I’m allowed to have a little crush on a celebrity, aren’t I?

Millions of people do.

What’s not to love about Bea’s Garden? Its higgledy-piggledy layout, fascinating plants and occasional resident black cat makes it the most charming place to visit on a sunny afternoon. Plus Bea has bees – and her Honey Festival is sure to create a buzz. But not everyone thinks Bea’s Garden is the bee’s knees. The Man at the Big House next door has been a thorn in Bea’s side for the longest time, with his unnecessarily snippy letters about her beautiful climbing plants ruining his ‘clean lines’. Could he and his poisonous project manager Carla pose problems for her Festival?

Or can Bea rely on the Man’s cousin – and her newest annual pass holder – Marcus Rainton to fight her corner? With bee best friends, big black cats, a secret garden gate and a surprising identity reveal, Bea’s Garden is surely in line for its most magical summer yet! www.choc-lit.com 1kitap1.com/en Chapter One Bea So you may wonder why you’ve caught me like this – “this” being perched astride a high garden wall, which was probably best before 1800, dressed in a bumble bee outfit. I’ve even got the deely-boppers to match. And don’t let Nature fool you – if bees are as fat as I am in this outfit, it should be totally impossible for them to fly. Fact. I’m not flying though. I’m not going anywhere. My cousin, Fae, is standing looking up at me, alongside the hugest, fattest, blackest cat I’ve ever encountered.

Fae is making helpful comments like, ‘Shall we get you a zip wire? Would you like to come down that way, Cousin Bea? Because if you do, then Alfie will probably be able to work out the maths and triangulate it, and fashion a zip wire in no time, and then you can come down right in the middle of your beehives, and that will look, really, really cool.’

Alfie is Fae’s boyfriend. He’s good at science and triangulating and things, but his many scientific talents aren’t really going to be helpful to me at this very moment in time. ‘Mow wow,’ says the cat, and then Fae says, ‘Yes, Schubert, you could probably have a go on it as well.

We could fashion you a little harness, and then you—’ ‘Shut up, Fae!’ I mutter between gritted teeth. ‘I’ve almost got him in sight.’ “Him” being The Man who lives in the Big House on the other side of the wall. ‘I’m not going anywhere yet.’
