Kinney Rd., Tucson 85743; (520) 733-5158 Dog-friendly: Dogs not permitted Trail surface: Mix of packed sand, loose rock, and soft wash gravel Land status: Saguaro National Park Nearest town: Tucson; services along Ina and Silverbell Roads to the east Maps: Saguaro National Park–West Tucson Mountain District Hiking Guide; available at Red Hills Visitor Center Other trail users: Equestrians Amenities: None Water: None on the trail Finding the trailhead: From the Red Hills Visitor Center, drive north on Kinney Road about 1.8 miles to its junction with Sandario Road.

Turn right and follow Sandario almost 4 miles to its junction with Picture Rocks Road at a four-way stop. Turn right here and proceed 5.5 miles to an unmarked parking area on the left side of Picture Rocks Road, just before it ascends to Contzen Pass, signaled by a 20-mph speed zone. Alternatively, from central Tucson, drive west on I-10 to the Ina Road exit (exit 248). Drive west on Ina to its junction with Wade Road, about 1.5 miles past the intersection with Silverbell Road.

Turn left on Wade, which will soon curve around to the west and, after reaching the Saguaro National Park boundary, become Picture Rocks Road. Cross Contzen Pass and immediately look for the paved parking area on your right, the starting point for your hike. The Hike Before you begin your hike, you must survive the crossing of Picture Rocks Road, which is not guaranteed, since traffic rounds the blind curves here at Indy 500 speeds.

Be cautious, and don’t dawdle!
