It was a grand structure, a towering building that seemed to be carved out of white steel, over a hundred stories high, lit with shinning blue and green lights. It was done in the Obsidian style with sea creatures shimmering in holographic glee around the structure as if it were a reef around which they could take sanctuary. Herra almost felt remorse at the fact that she would not see its innards, even more so that she would have never considered such entertainment had she not met him.

“Herra,” Arune called, his voice rigid once more. “Herran Daskana. I was a fool. No, I am a fool to have picked you. But it’s not what you think.” “I don’t care what is.” “You should. You should care about something. Do you care about me?” The shuttle was taking far too long to reach the landing pad as his words caused her head to ache with confusing thoughts which she was eager to drown with liquor.

“Did I?” she stressed in the past tense. “I did.” “But your Alliance would always be before me?” “Yes. It would,” she snapped as finally the craft’s landing struts connected with the hard surface and stabilized. With a quick study of the side panels, Herra discovered the disengaging lock of the shuttle door still in the closed position.

It was normal for the lock to remain sealed until the shuttle was secure and shut down. With the quiet of the engines upon the damnable thing, Herra could hardly tell. Yet she waited for the sound of the door release nonetheless, the green light that would mean the doors could be opened.

“I mean no harm to the Alliance, Herra, but I do want to take you from them. I am guilty of that. Only that. I don’t want you to spy on them for me, threaten or destroy them. I want you. I always have.” The lock remained red.

I would very much like to thank the ladies of Colors in Darkness, who had to listen to me whine and crow, many a day about this work. Kenya Moss- Dyme, Dahlia DeWinters and Eden Royce put up with too many OCD moments to count, and I sincerely appreciate them!

The environment was no different than what she had been raised in. Buildings, factories and domiciles ruined by projectile blasts, still crackling with flames, surrounded her. Jagged rubble and great slabs of metal and cultured stones were under her feet even inside the building, but she was steady and careful in her gait. Walking over and through chaos had been familiar to her since she was a child.

Her home world had been in a constant state of war. She had played in fields of live ordnance, stolen weapons off dead soldiers, retrieved remnants of the war drones sent among her people to kill, and witnessed the anatomy of several races, opened and rotting, in the Turskan heat. So, the Narsis mining station held no horrors for her, only grim focus. She had a mission to complete. Outfitted in the Panther WY-819 mech suit, Herra knew that her appearance frightened the small group of survivors huddled before her.

The blue-black mechanical armor she wore was made of rare titanchrome metal. Between the cybernetic life support and physical strength magnifiers, her ammunition load and armaments, there was a great difference separating her childhood and the present. Now, she was a force to be reckoned with. The visor inside her helmet gave her access to not only several spectrums of light but enhanced vision and digital information sent directly from the United Galactic Alliance mission control.

Even with the slanted V visor, it didn’t make Herra look any less threatening as the Panther made her twice her already impressive height of six foot two.
