Beyond Ransom – Sophie Weston

That would be his temper. Always from a small boy he has exploded when his plans are upset.’ ‘Oh, that’s what it was, was it? I shall take care not to upset his plans again, in that case.’ Julia was dry. ‘Excellent,’ said a cool voice from the doorway behind them. Julia swung round so fast that she knocked the ladle out of Angelina’s hand and it fell to the stone floor with a clatter.
In some confusion, she darted after it, aware that her cheeks were pink and hoping that Roberto would either not notice or would ascribe it to her energetic dash for the ladle. From the sardonic look in his eye, she doubted whether her hopes would be realised. But all he said was, ‘I apologise for startling you, but I need to talk to Senorita Lennox.’ Angelina beamed on him. ‘But of course.’ Julia said nothing, quietly putting the ladle on the hearth where Angelina could find it easily.
Roberto gave her a frowning sideways look. ‘Were you busy?’ ‘No.’ She struggled to keep her voice neutral, surprised and alarmed at the great leap of delighted recognition that her heart had taken at the sound of his voice. ‘But I was going to the maize fields above the village.’ ‘Then I will escort you,’ he said formally. He made it sound as if they were taking a promenade in the Bois de Boulogne, Julia thought a little hysterical- ly.
She cast a quick look at him under her lashes but, as usual, found his face unreadable. She bent her head in acquiescence and preceded him quietly out of the house. Behind her she could feel the heat of Angelina’s benevolent, sentimental gaze, like the rays of a sun lamp on the back of her neck. She blushed again.
“What do you intend to do with me?” Julia’s voice was a whisper, cold with fear. “You? well, I’ve had several plans in the last twenty-four hours. Originally, I had intended to trade Sehor Lennox to the president in return for certain concessions.” “Why can’t you trade Senorita Lennox then?” Julia asked as calmly as she could. “I thought it unchivalrous,” Madariago said, laughing harshly.
“But you have convinced me that I must be less sexist.” “And if the president doesn’t agree to your concessions?” Madariago was leaving, but he turned to look her over coolly. “Then I can think of a way you might make yourself useful.” Useful, it had a workaday sound, like housework or typing letters.
She frowned. “Useful to your operation?” The smile grew. “Useful to me,” he corrected gently And the smile was gone. SOPHIE WESTON wrote and illustrated her first book—at the age of five. After university she decided on a career in international finance, which was tremendously stimulating and demanding, but it was not enough.
Something was missing in her life, and that something turned out to be writing. These days her life is complete. She loves exciting travel and adventure yet hates to stray too long from her homey cottage in Chelsea, where she writes.
