“I’d thought you’d be with Fia.” I gently pick up the cat, still not quite sure why he lets me hold him, but he does. Max nuzzles his face against mine. I haven’t slept well the past couple of nights since Max has been sleeping in the infirmary. Night terrors once again plague me.

The beast which emerged from the Great Lake on my quest now emerges in my dreams and rages against me. It quickens my pulse, freezes my insides, and instills a fear I can’t rid myself of. “I need you to sleep,” I tell the furry feline. His only response is to meow and again nuzzle the scruff on my chin with his own. “But she might need you more.” With the cat in my arms, I wait in my room for Adette to return to hers.

When I hear Adette’s door close, I find my way to the infirmary with Max. All is quiet and dark when I slowly open the door to Fia’s room. The lamp near her bed has been doused and the only light which shines into the room is from the sconces in the hallway. Fia appears to be sleeping, but I’m a master at faking sleep, and I know it when I see it.

But I’ll play along. I set Max on the bed, and he immediately kneads the mattress near Fia’s side before settling into the curve of her body. “Sweet dreams,” I say from the door, with one more look at the girl I wish would invade my dreams. 1kitap1.com/en Chapter Thirty-One Fia “How did you sleep?” The same bright and chipper face as the previous morning greets me again. I heard Adette come in earlier, but I pretended to be asleep.

“Oh.” I blink my eyes and start to push myself to a sitting position, just like the previous morning. “Adette. Good morning. What’re you doing here?”

My narrowed eyes stare out of my hooded cloak at the young man with his scrawny arm outstretched over the well.

“Put the kitten down.” “No one’s going to miss one kitten.” The rough looking youth wiggles the ball of fur in his hand. I’ve seen this bully around the fishing village before and never had a good feeling about him. “And it’s a runt. It’s best I put it out of its misery.” He extends his hand out even further over the deep well as he holds the kitten by the scruff of its neck. The gray tabby kitten gives a helpless mew which only helps fuel my anger.

“If you drop that kitten,” I say in a gruff voice, “I’ll show you what it means to be dropped down a well.” “Ha!” A single solitary laugh emerges from the young man’s mouth. “I’d like to see you try.” “Put the kitten down now or I will.” “Oh.” The bully’s jaw falls in a mocking way as he mimics dropping the kitten. I hold my breath and tense, ready, but he doesn’t let go of the helpless animal.

“I almost lost it.” “I will only tell you one more time.”
