Blood On The Books – Kristy T Dixon

“Dang, man. That was like getting ready for the fireworks, then getting a disappointing fizzle.” Brian didn’t say anything. I agreed with Dirk. It had started so perfect, and then… fizzled to nothing. 1kitap1.com/en Chapter 11 rian didn’t come into the library the following morning. I hadn’t seen him at breakfast either. He was just… gone. I peeked out the window at the mostly empty street. “Where’s cutie?” Birdie asked. I shrugged. “I’m not sure. He was gone when I woke up.” “Dirk told me about your adventures in the woods.
Too bad you didn’t see anything.” I nodded. “I feel almost 90 percent sure this entire thing is a lie. Avery just made something up to get attention.” “Probably.” “Brian here yet?” Dirk asked, joining us. “No.” “Weird. He doesn’t seem like the type to disappear. I called him, but it went to voicemail.” I tried to look unbothered, but what if he regretted that kiss so much he’d gone straight back to Kansas?
I pulled out my phone and called Brenden. “Hello? This is Brenden.” “Hey, it’s Meg. Have you seen Paisley today?” “No. I saw Mr. Hooper put her in her carrier this morning.” My heart skipped. “What about Copper?” “He’s here with me.” “Thanks.” I hung up. Great. Either the Kings had kidnapped Brian or he’d run home to avoid talking about a kiss. I called his number. Still voicemail. “Dirk?” “Yeah?” “Can you keep everything running if I leave early?”
His eyes widened. “You trust me with that?” “Yes.” “Cool. Sure.” I nodded and bolted to my car. Was I being logical? Absolutely not. Did I care? Also no. Soon, I was parked outside the Kings’ house. I told myself it was fine. If they’d actually kidnapped Brian, his car would be here. Why would the Kings even think to bother Brian? Still, I knocked. A tall man in a suit answered.
His gray eyes were sharp and unreadable beneath neatly combed salt-and-pepper hair. A faint crease between his brows gave the impression that nothing ever quite met his standards. “Can I talk to Mr. King?” “He’s not here!” Ryanne said, pushing past the butler. “Hello, Megara. Nash had to go out of town last month. We aren’t sure when he can come back.” Her long, silver-blond hair wasn’t brushed, which seemed out of character for someone usually so composed. Her silvery eyes were unfocused and distant.
She seemed confused, like her thoughts were wading through molasses. “Can I call him?” I asked. “Sorry. He doesn’t have any service.” She frowned and turned to the butler. “Corey? He doesn’t have service, right?” Corey cleared his throat. “He doesn’t.” His gaze lingered on Ryanne a second too long, expression unreadable but jaw tight. Her lips turned down, and she muttered something. All I could make out was “service” and “lazy.” I was guessing she was drunk. Corey stepped aside, still watching her with that same quiet calculation.

Chapter 22 Special Thanks Also By Kristy Dixon About the Author 1kitap1.com/en “I Chapter 1 think I pulled a muscle mixing batter,” Birdie groaned, collapsing in a chair behind the checkout desk. “I need a vacation.” I laughed. “After one day?”
She ran a hand over her frizzy brown hair. “One day? Felt like a hundred.” Brian leaned against the desk. “It felt long, but it was a success.” “Sure was,” Birdie said. “I sold so many desserts! I don’t think I sat once.” I turned to Brian. “How many people signed up for library cards?” He scratched his chin. “I didn’t count, but it felt like I was signing people up all day.
Lots of people paid for premium memberships.” I’d worried about the premium memberships. It gave the customer a free muffin a week and allowed them to come in early once a week to check out more books than with the free membership. I didn’t think anyone would pay for it, but it appeared they would. I let out a long, satisfied sigh. The day had been full of the steady buzz of voices, crumb-filled napkins, and a towering stack of new card applications. My library was going to make it.
I knew opening day would be more successful than other days, but I was pumped. When my brother first bought me this building and told me I needed to make a living from it, I’d been disheartened, but that was then. A smile crept across my face when I thought about all the kids who had run around, eyes shining while they explored. There had been a few lemonade spills, but they had all stayed in the food area. I worried about mixing drinks and books. That could lead to disaster.
I hadn’t known a cookie could sell a library, but here we were. A bakery in the front, books in the back, and enough community buzz to make me hopeful.
