“So, you planned for this, then. Fucking me after the wedding.” He laughs, kicks at the grass, shifts his weight. “Yeah. Something like that.” I carefully keep my tone light, teasing. “And I’m sure that grocery order didn’t include breakfast food.” He lifts an eyebrow. “Nope.” I shrug, stepping past him, smirking over my shoulder. “Too bad. I give incredible morning head.” I only look back once. He’s watching me, lips curled up, eyes sharp and just a little bit soft.

And for one impossible moment, I let myself pretend we’re walking home together for real, no secrets, no hiding, no rules but our own. But it’s just a fantasy. So, I keep walking, into the dusk, and hope the future has more of this—more of him, more of us—than either of us will admit out loud. 1kitap1.com/en Twenty-Three My Favourite Game Spencer Yeah, I bet his morning head game is on point.

That man could suck the chrome off a tailpipe. I wouldn’t mind waking up to—nope. Stick to the rules, Stark. He can’t hurt you if you don’t let him. That’s the game I’m best at. My game. My rules. We head toward the exit of the dog park in silence, but I can feel Ryan’s eyes on me, the way he always watches—hungry, curious, hopeful.

My chest aches in ways I refuse to acknowledge. Fucking weddings. I decide to distract myself. There’s an abandoned tennis ball on the path. I stop, pick it up, and lob it halfway across the grass. It’s barely out of my hands before Ryan is off like a shot, running after it. Oh. My. God. He’s an actual golden retriever.

He snags the tennis ball, then his long legs eat up the distance back to me.

I’m excited to bring you Ryan (Butters) and Spencer’s story. In some ways, this was tougher for me than King of Pain. I’m a heart on sleeve guy, so Anthony and Chance came natural to me. Writing a character like Spence, who—at first glance—is cold, sharp, and closed off?

That was a challenge. When you dive into this book, I ask you to give Spence the benefit of the doubt, particularly with one of his “rules”. He (and we) don’t discover the reason behind it until later in the book. There are elements to this story that reflect a bit on where we are as a society. I tried not to lean too heavily into it, but it is my firm belief that fighting the good fight will always include the creative arts.

I think you will love Ryan and Spence’s journey. Yes, you get to visit with the whole gang—and several new friends join the fold. Lastly, Bone Deep deals with extremely difficult and triggering topics. I urge anyone with triggers to read the trigger warnings in the next section. Enjoy! JP *NOTE: Bone Deep is Book 2 in the Damaged Hearts series.

It can be read as a standalone, but the series revolves around a strong found family element. You would not be lost if you started with Book 2, but you will have a better experience getting to know this zany cast of characters in Book 1, King of Pain, first. 1kitap1.com/en A COUPLE NOTES • At time of publishing, only one NFL player has come out while actively playing.

Additionally, only one player has come out prior to the draft.
