He frowned at the unusual thought as he walked over to where Grayson and Aaron were shrugging to get their clothes on. Was that really true? That he was born to be an Alpha mate? He could do so much good if he was. Pity the Alpha they chose for you is a wandering idiot.

“Hey Aaron. Grayson.” He called out and the Alphas walked over, their huge bodies packed with muscle. Stephen waited for the wave of lust that he assumed would accompany the sight of the two Alphas beautiful bodies, and yet, there was nothing. Just like there had always been. I’m so not gay. Then what the fuck’s with Brad then? “Grayson. Will and Cal have offered to do the next run. They’re both very capable. Is there any instructions you want to give them?” Grayson sighed. “That would be great, actually.

We didn’t sense anything on our run, but if you see, or smell, anything unusual, come back straight away. Howl if you don’t think you’ll make it.” “Fine by us.” Cal grinned, pulling at his clothes in preparation for the run. It was about time that they all worked together like this. “Actually. Let me just grab another person, Cal.”

He twisted and walked over to the Gamma area. As he stepped up to the tables, everyone went quiet and looked to him with wide, searching eyes. “Hey. We’re all taking turns doing perimeter runs. Cal and Will are going now and need a third. Does anyone here feel comfortable shifting and going with them?” He looked pointedly towards two of his old friends, both of which he knew could shift easily. Dean and Tom. No one spoke. “Oh, okay, I’ll go ask the Betas then.” Dean pushed himself to his feet.

He was proud and strong. “I’ll go.” Atta boy. “Great. Come.” Dean followed him back to where the Betas stood, ready to shift. “Guys, this is Dean. He’ll be your third if that’s okay? His wolf is very strong, so if you need a hand, don’t hesitate to ask.” The Betas looked at Grayson, their faces hesitant. The Alpha however grinned widely. “Nice to meet you properly, Dean.” Grayson held out his hand and Dean stepped forward, shaking the Alpha’s outstretched palm. “Thanks for the help.” “No problem.

This is my family too. We’ve gotta work together.” Dean managed to get out, though his voice shook. “Three sounds better than two. Let’s go.” Cal said and the three of them headed off. Stephen watched them go and Grayson patted him on the back. “You did good there. Do you think many of the other Gammas will join in? I didn’t think they could shift very easily.” “Tomorrow’s the full moon, so that will help. There’s probably a dozen or so that I know of.

So, yeah. I think we’ll be fine for the next few days.” Grayson winked and patted him once more.

The waves at Maroochydore were notoriously huge, but today it was flat. Especially this early in the day.

He glanced around at the soft swell, the sun sparkling off the bluey- black ocean in white, glistening light. It was a beautiful day and thanks to the lack of surf, the beach was deserted save for a couple of grommets who weren’t at school yet. It should be a perfect day for him. And yet, as he sat on his board letting his fingers drift in the chilly water around him, his chest ached.

What the hell was going on with him lately? Something wasn’t right, and no amount of surfing, eating, or fucking random hot guys was sorting him out. There had to be something else, and unfortunately, a part of him knew that the ‘it’ that was wrong had to do with the ‘Borough. Nothing else made sense. He was a werewolf. He didn’t get sick and yet he felt unwell. Not to mention the fact that he was also an Alpha, the biggest and strongest of his kind.

There were legends though, that told of this ache. A pain that would tug him back to his roots. A place he didn’t want to be. His accelerated hearing picked up on a decent wave headed his way and he fell forward onto his board, putting the power into his shoulders. He coasted along until the roar of the wave opened up and he popped to his feet as the majestic water picked him up.
