Break Me First – Fortuna Lux (1)

That moment she came apart, looking up at me like she could see every monster, every ruin inside me—and still chose to stay. I don’t believe in fairytales. But something split open in me under that moonlight. Something I can’t put back together. I drag in a breath. Rosemary, salt, her skin. It’s all tangled in the air like a drug. I let myself pretend—just for a second—that I get to keep her.
Then the knock comes. Three soft raps against the stillness. I don’t move. Just open my eyes. The door cracks open. One of the staff hovers, not looking at me. “Signore. They’re waiting for you downstairs.” The espresso hits the back of my throat like ash. I set the cup down and walk away from the view.
Naomi stirs, stretches, the hem of the sheets sliding higher up her thigh. I force my eyes away before I change my mind. No time for softness now. The mask goes back on. The hallway smells like lemon oil and polished stone. The villa hums with heat and age—arched doorways, frescoed ceilings, echoes of a thousand secrets. I pass a sunlit courtyard where a gardener snips lavender, but it doesn’t reach me. The sitting room is a shrine to old money and older power.
Vito lounges like a monarch, crisp linen suit, gold rings gleaming. Dante scrolls through his phone with a glass of Barolo in hand. Claudia sits poised like a painting—flawless, deliberate, untouchable. Her dress is white. The irony is fucking blinding. “You’re late,” Vito says, not looking up. “Didn’t realize we scheduled this ambush.” Claudia rises, smile razor-sharp. “Gideon. You look… well used.” I give her nothing. “Tuscany’s good for the blood.” She glides over, kisses my cheeks—air, calculation, currency. She steps back and scans me like she’s taking inventory.
“Your uncle’s concerned,” she says, all sugar and poison. “Things are moving quickly. Alucard’s… motivated.” The name makes my spine go rigid. “He always was.”
