Generally, private dyadic Breathwork is optimal for relational, corrective experiences, particularly for those who carry abandonment pain. The combined impact of personal attunement, focus on the Breathee, and having breathing mirrored by another can produce healing beyond words or imagination. In this privacy Breathees often more readily bring forth and share deeply personal experiences and disowned aspects of themselves.

Breathers can also build agency and confidence because they are initiating and allowing the change, rather than a group driving the experience. Many Breathers use Breathwork to reset, release, and energize, which certainly can provide increased resiliency and resources for inner transformation. For enduring change, we go deeper.

Usually, individual Breathwork provides this deepening, yet sometimes group Breathwork can be more impactful. In group Breathwork sessions, Breathees are often inspired to new heights by the effort, courage, and openness of others. The energetic field of multiple breathers consciously breathing together is palpable, leading to complementary experiences of well-being, emotional release, and mystical realities. Hearing others express can help Breathees identify their own stuck, unacknowledged experiences—some that felt too frightening or isolating to face.

In a group, allowing ourselves to feel the intensity of our interior landscape while supporting others’ contact with their interior selves, elicits greater self-acceptance and curiosity. We gain a sense of belonging—no longer alone. Breathees often emerge from group Breathwork feeling more capable of being with others’ diverse temperaments. Some group Breathwork sessions have Therapist-Breathworkers guiding all participants in Breathwork simultaneously. In other formats, participants pair up for two rounds of Breathwork.

In the first round, one Breathee does Breathwork, and the other is the designated sitter or companion. In the second round, roles are reversed. Sitters’ wisdom and intuition can be astounding, as if they are being used as a vehicle by consciousness itself. However, all sitters need to be given explicit guidance about refraining from talking to, touching, or suggesting things to their breathing partner, unless the Breathee asks for something.

Practicing with sitters gives Breathees the benefit of receiving full attention while in a group setting. And sitters can have profoundly enriching experiences, that can be equally or more transformative than their own Breathwork session.
