Too busy screwing all day and night, that was all. And Jenny was pretty hot, so yeah, he could understand that. He’d fuck her himself if given the chance. He arrived at their house. Nothing looked suspicious, no front door wide open splattered in blood, so he walked down the path and knocked on the door.

When no one came to answer he knocked harder. Had they gone out for the day? It was possible, but what wasn’t possible was that they didn’t send him a single text to say they were okay. Brian had told him he’d phone Richard the day after returning from Scotland to go for a beer and it was now well into the afternoon and still nothing.

Richard knocked even harder, then pulled out his phone and tried again while peering in the living room window. And that was when the first suspicions of something terribly wrong filtered through. A bottle of wine lay on the carpeted floor, its contents having spilled out looking like blood. Jenny would fucking kill Brian if he did that. He tried the front door and it opened so he poked his head in and called to them.

That he received no answer made him even more nervous. If Jennifer was on the toilet it was one of life’s guarantees that her phone would have been with her. His muscles taut, as though preparing himself for a fight, he checked the bottom of the house and picked up the empty bottle, setting it back down on the table.

The wine on the carpet was now dry. Alarm bells rang in his ears. “Brian? Jenny?” he called. There was no indication of a fight, nothing to suggest burglars. The TV was there, Jenny’s laptop sat on a coffee table. He headed upstairs. A whiff of something foul drifted up his nostrils. Richard checked the bathroom, then moved to the spare bedroom and then, at the back, the main bedroom.

The smell was stronger here and this put Richard on full alert. His hands curled into fists, he kicked the door open that was slightly ajar and waited for someone to come running at him. When no one did, he took a tentative step inside. He wasn’t entirely sure what he was expecting to find —the possibilities were many—but the small splatter of blood on the far wall was a good indication he wasn’t wrong in his assumptions.

But as far as he could tell neither Jenny nor Brian were here. The smell was bad though. Didn’t they have a cat?

It joined the other contraption someone had forced up her other hole. “Get your fucking hands off me!” she screamed, her body coated in gashes and blood dripping from several orifices, several teeth missing. There were a few people dragging her but she had blood in her swollen, throbbing eyes and couldn’t tell exactly who it was.

Only Richard her ex- boyfriend and a couple of others. There had to be more though; she was being dragged by her long, black hair which had been torn off in places as she frantically tried to free herself, and others gripped her by her legs and arms. There was a torrent of punches and slaps, others hawking up great blobs of saliva and spitting into her face, although considering the amount of blood dripping down her, this didn’t make much difference.

“You fuckin’ whore. Think you can get away with fuckin’ other people’s husbands? Your friend’s husbands, you little slut? You gonna get what’s comin’ bitch and ya gonna suffer long and hard.” That was Richard. Behind his back because no one would ever dare to say it to his face they called him Deadbeat Dick.

That was when he had a son of his own and bailed on the mother, refusing to pay child benefit.
