I think you need more to go on. If you feel that you can’t commit or move forward, then following him once or twice will make you feel more confident and stop worrying.” Lauren seemed optimistic. “I think you might be right. I mean, I am really falling for him, Lauren. I think I love him.”

Lauren smiled, happy for her. “I could come with you. I’ll come over for the weekend as planned and we can follow him on Friday after work.” “Really?” “Yes, really.” Emilia remained silent. “It’s no big deal, Emilia. You’ll see, it’ll be fine.” “I suppose we could do it, just this once.” “We’ll probably end up waiting for him and Jake outside some bar.” “Mmm, maybe.” “Oh no, my train has arrived! I’ve got to go.” “Okay, see you on Friday.” “See you then. Take care.”

And with that, Emilia was left staring into space, unsure about whether or not she was really going to do it. That Friday, the doorbell rang. The two friends hugged warmly, and Lauren settled in. They chatted on the sofa, then Emilia popped a couple of pizzas into the oven and they caught up on each other’s news. Lauren was a postgraduate student at university, training to be a journalist, and although she was single, she was happy to be so. Only last year she had ended a long-term relationship that had turned into a long-distance relationship.

She needed to be close to London and wasn’t willing to move to the US, so it didn’t work out. She was an ambitious and attractive brunette with a slender figure, long, wavy hair and a pretty, diamond-shaped face. It was almost five o’clock and they had finished their pizzas. “So…” Emilia hesitated. “Shall we… well, d’you think we should?” “Oh yes, we need to check up on Charles!” Lauren said with enthusiasm. Emilia smiled nervously. “Shall we go for a cappuccino and relax, as it’s only five?”

“Yes, then come back here, get my car and drive to his office at around six-ish.” They got ready and chatted over a cappuccino, then headed to Mayfair. Emilia was growing progressively more nervous and feeling guilty as they approached the street. She couldn’t believe that she’d let Lauren talk her into this. “Are you sure about this Lauren?

Sunlight poured into the oak-panelled reading room through the tall windows.

Emilia was cataloguing some new acquisitions. Charles and Jake, both smartly dressed, were taking up an entire desk with three huge glossy-interior books and chatting away a little louder than they should, as if they owned the place. Emilia tried to ignore them, but couldn’t help noticing the other library users looking over at them every so often. Finally, she decided to approach them. She noticed that their books were about period homes in London. “Please can you keep the noise down?” She whispered. The younger of the two smiled and looked facetiously over to his colleague.

Charles looked up at Emilia and sheepishly replied. “Sorry.” Emilia immediately noticed his bright blue eyes as he drew his finger to his lips like an obedient child. She was aware of his lingering gaze as he looked into her face. Charles paused and for a second felt as if he were short-circuiting.

That evening, Emilia left work with her head filled with Dewey decimal numbers.
