Catnip And Crimes – Lucinda Race

“And Gretchen could have been in any of the stores and easily pulled the trigger. But do they all own guns? I think the shells found were from a nine millimeter.” Next to Gretchen, I wrote money again. He gave me a sharp look. “How did you know that? We haven’t talked about it.”
I gave him my best innocent look. “You must have told me. Otherwise, I couldn’t have possibly known.” Suspicion clouded his eyes. “You haven’t learned how to hack computers, have you?” Now I pretended to be shocked. “I might be overly curious at times, but I would never, under any circumstances, knowingly break the law.” He held up his hands in defense. “I’m sorry. Sometimes you worry me with your overzealous nature.
I wanted to put it out there.” “It was out and now put it back in.” There was a part of me that was actually bruised that Gage would say something like that. “I’m sorry, Lily. This whole thing has me on edge. I know you’ve been asking questions, trying to help, and it scares me. The last time—” I jumped on that statement since I knew where it was going. “That won’t happen again. Besides, I’m looking at public records and people are coming to me to talk.
I haven’t had to try to get someone to slip up and talk to me.” He looked satisfied with my explanation. I wasn’t about to mention that if I needed to branch out and seek answers, I would. In my mind, that went without actually verbalizing it. “So that leaves Gretchen. We know her business has been suffering for the last year.
Teddy had been snapping up all the prime contracts with the best chance for commission. I found out how many houses she sold last year and, a rough estimate if she made the full percentage, she was under six figures.” “Any idea how that compares to the previous couple of years?” Now I had captured his full attention. “In the last three years, she grossed well over six figures. That makes quite a decent amount in a bank account.” “Not to mention her ego.”
Gage got up and paced the length of the room. “I need to take a harder look at her.”

With that, happy reading! *** I peeked out the front door of my bookshop, The Cozy Nook, right after I heard the nails on the chalkboard kind of grating but it was metal grinding on metal. A sound that jarred my last nerve. I had spent the last hour trying to perfect a levitation spell, to no avail. “Milo,” I called to my gray tabby cat. “Did you hear that?” If any customer had been in the shop, they’d assume I always talked to my cat like he understood, but in this case, he could.
Milo was my familiar. He slunk into the room. “What are you yelling about? I was having a perfectly peaceful snooze in the sun.” No doubt on the kitchen counter again, but I didn’t care. My space was his space. I had come to terms with the fact that we’d be together for life, even if he annoyed me at times. But that was bound to happen in the best of relationships.
“There’s been a car accident in the town square.” I pulled open the door. “I’m going to make sure everyone is okay.” “Right. You want to investigate the scene of the accident.” I glared at him over my shoulder. “You say that like it’s a bad thing.” “Lily, you’re a witch, not a cop. Leave the mundane stuff to the police.
Call your boyfriend, Gage.” I sighed the minute Milo mentioned Gage’s name.
