Cane – Michael Joseph And Robert Donaldson (1)

Red eyed him for a minute. ‘I’ll tell ya what I’m gointa do — nuthin’! He wagged his head from side to side. “Trust me to end up on a strippa dirt nexta that crew. Reckon if things don’t improve, I’ll get shot of it and set up again on t’other side of the Plateau.’
‘But you’ve cleared five acres already.’ ‘Can stay cleared! Soddem. A feller’s gotta have his inde-bloody- pendence, Else or no Else.’ He paused, then asked, “Do the boys know about this ?’ ‘Know? The whole district knows. Have another beer.’ Five timbercutters pushed through the door. Reg, the leader, indicated the bar. ‘There he is, the bloody old stallion hisself!’ He strode across the floor with.a hand out.
‘How are yuh, Red boy?’ Red ignored the hand. ‘Fine lotta cobbers I got. Y’look like a bunch of hungry relatives at a rich feller’s funeral. Now piss off and leave me alone, I got thinking t’do.’ He turned his back. ‘We’s come in to help yuh, Red,’ said: Reg in a voice that indicated otherwise. ‘Came rushin’ in special.’ ‘Well yous can rush flamin’ out again special,’ snarled Red.
‘Now get off outa here while I’s still friendly. Go and have a roll, get shagged, shoot bloody through!’ Reg was undeterred. “You better give your cobbers the drum, Red. Who’s this new sheila?’ ‘And why for Chrissake should I talk to you lotta drongs abouta lady ?’
‘Lady? Old belt from Brissie, I reckon.’ ‘ “Pig’s arse she is! She’s a beaut. And all for the Red feller.’ Red drank a toast to himself. ‘Or any other feller that rolls in.’ ‘Deaner a time — — and free on Sunday.’ “Ya mob of cronks,’ jeered Red. “Ya wouldn’t know a sheila from a knot-hole. I tell ya she’s a corker, a whoppy-dazzler.
And I know – I’ve been there!’ He stuck a thumb in his shirt. Reg made a careful study of him, then pronounced gravely, ‘ ‘Reckon he has, too,’ and retired behind his glass. ‘And she’s gotta shop,’ Red boasted. “You’re kidding.’ ‘L ain’t. She’s gotta ladies’ shop in Main Street.’ “Well stone the crows. Where’d you pick her up, Red?’ ‘Never you mind.’ ‘Aw come on, sport. How’d you find her — on the beat?”
“Leave him alone,’ ordered Reg. *Can’t y’see he’s going strong? ‘Now Red,’ — he turned back, serious —‘what’s this heifer like?’ ‘I told ya, all class.’ ‘All arse, you mean.’ Til do you, Rocky, y’great emu!” “Hey, Red, what about. Elsie?’ ‘Yair, she won’t take this little lot lying down.’ e n- Red stared moodily at the window. ‘I ain’t saying nuthin’. You lot is saying it for me.’ ag you better shoot back to the gully while your head’s still on.’
‘Head? It ain’t his head we’re worried about.’ Reg broke off to study his watch. He drained his beer. ‘Next race is on inaminnit.
