At this point, of course, in English history, there had never been a reigning queen of England. The only person who had ever claimed that position – the Empress Matilda – had never actually secured recognition for her tenure of that role, despite the fact that her son had subsequently succeeded to the throne as King Henry II. Nevertheless, the role in England of George (whom his brother had created Duke of Clarence) was now becoming uncertain.

Indeed, his elder brother was clearly aware of this, because he attempted to win another position for George, by promoting plans for a marriage between the Duke of Clarence and the Burgundian heiress presumptive, Marie. Unfortunately the Burgundian court apparently preferred to negotiate instead a marriage between Marie’s father, the Count of Charolais, and Edward and George’s sister, Margaret of York, presumably in the hope of producing a male heir apparent for the duchy. The potential project of a Burgundian marriage for George therefore produced no result. Meanwhile, Cecily must have been aware that a relationship was developing between her nephew, Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, and his young cousin, George (Duke of Clarence).

Warwick had definitely felt insulted by Edward IV’s publication of his marriage to Elizabeth Widville. He also opposed the projected Burgundian marriage of Margaret of York (which was strongly supported by Elizabeth Widville and her family). Warwick would have preferred to arrange a French royal marriage for Margaret. He also explored with King Louis XI of France the possibility of granting some Burgundian lands and titles to his young cousin, George.

This idea was opposed by Edward IV, but of course, George himself welcomed the idea. Thus by the early summer of 1467 George was known to be siding with his elder cousin, Warwick, and to be at odds with his brother, the king. Cecily’s own earlier problems in respect of Edward and his secret marriage were now apparently augmented by the fact that one of her younger sons was now experiencing problems with the king.
