“I’m so sorry, Winona. Coming here was a mistake.” Hearing him say that stung. She’d been looking forward to it for months. It had served as her motivation through lessons and training. And now he was saying it was a mistake? If she was the one who wanted to come here, what did that say about her? Instead of picking at that festering wound, she asked, “What can’t I see?”

“The markings on my neck.” Winona remembered when Anareen had mentioned them in the luggage shop on Station Fii. How fucking stupid am I? “What do they mean, Kasskian?” He hesitated. “They… appear when we’ve chosen a breeding partner. A mate.” Her brows knitted together in confusion. “Did you have them before we met?” “… No.” So she was the reason? The cause? He’d chosen her?

“But we can’t even…” “That doesn’t matter,” he said. Winona felt as though a boulder rested on her chest. It was impossible to breathe deeply. A mate involved commitment. And monogamy. Fucking obligations. A sliver of outrage cut through the anxiety, so she threw herself at it. “You thought you could just choose me like that?” “No, Winona. Of course not. It’s… involuntary.” She stared at him. “I can’t believe I missed this in my research.” A terrible thought crossed her mind. “Is this why you discouraged me from doing further research?!”

“No,” he replied quickly. “Do they… go away?” His head drooped. “It usually takes a long time for this… to run its course.” “Months?” she asked. “Longer,” he replied. “Years?!” “… Yes.” She simmered with rage. “You knew I couldn’t see them and you thought that made it okay to keep me in the dark? What the fuck?! Were you ever going to tell me?!” With each response, his head drooped lower in shame.

“Only if it became necessary, Winona, because it would ruin things. It’s necessary for you to know now because of our current situation.” “Explain that,” she demanded. “The clarity of the markings indicates close proximity to one’s mate. I am alone except for you.” He fidgeted with his claws for a moment and said, “The birth rate for our species isn’t declining by any means, but we’re still vastly outnumbered by the other dominant races in the universe.

A violent and spicy adventure that ends with a HEA but touches on dark subject matter (though I do my best to keep things light). Cyclical changes marking the passage of time only occurred when you were lucky enough to be orbiting something. But for now, home was an “Oasis” space station. That was what they called the ones in the middle of fucking nowhere. Even though station interiors were carefully designed to simulate atmospheric conditions, it was still considered unhealthy to live on one. Survival demanded immersing oneself in simulated gravity and light, pretending to be planetside. Yet Winona spent much of her time at the massive observation windows aboard the station, as though she was actually trying to cook her brain.

She loved the view of distant stars and nebulae and the barely audible, monotonous, ASMR-like hum that surrounded her. “Winona Dusk,” called a voice behind her, snapping her out of her trancelike state. She turned. A familiar humanoid being with smooth grey skin, large black eyes, high cheekbones and thin colorless lips approached. A Divdan. “Am I in trouble, Madam Yia?” Winona asked, speaking in plain English. Yia tilted her head to the side slightly, the Divdan equivalent of an exasperated eye roll.

She hated Winona calling her “madam.” “Note that this is your first hypothesis,” she said.
