A single desk lamp cast a dim glow over scattered reports, crime scene photos, and ballistic printouts strewn across Alan Kern’s desk. His fingers tapped rhythmically against the wood, next to a forgotten cup of coffee, now cold. Every detail of the case pulled at him, tightening the knot in his chest. A knock at the door broke his focus. “Come in,” Kern said, straightening. The door opened, and a young officer stepped inside, shoulders squared, tension written all over his face.

“You asked for me, Chief?” Kern motioned to the chair across from him. “You’re the SWAT officer who fired the rounds found in John Miller’s body?” The officer hesitated. “Yes, sir… but I don’t think those shots came from me.” Kern stopped tapping. His eyes narrowed. “Explain.” The officer shifted.

“During the operation, my weapon was taken. One of the suspects grabbed it in the chaos. I reported it immediately. There’s no way I fired those rounds.” Kern’s eyes sharpened. “I filed a report. Logged everything—the make, serial number, and time of loss. That gun’s been missing ever since.” Kern leaned forward, his expression dark.

“I’ve seen no such report.” The officer blinked. “Sir, I submitted it the same night. Through the official chain.” Silence stretched between them. Kern didn’t respond. He sat back slowly, the weight of those words settling in. That kind of report should’ve hit his desk. There was no reason it wouldn’t—unless someone made sure it didn’t. “Get out,” Kern said quietly.

The officer hesitated, then gave a tight nod and stepped out, shutting the door behind him. Kern stared at the papers in front of him. The angles, the wounds, the ballistic match—none of it lined up. If that missing weapon had been used to kill Miller… Then, this case was far from over. And the more he stared at the evidence, the more it started to feel like something was buried just beneath the surface.

A knock at the door broke through the noise. “Come in,” he said, his voice tight. Lieutenant Carter stepped inside and closed the door behind him. He was one of the few men Kern still trusted, and one of the few with the guts to speak freely. “Chief, we need to talk,” Carter said, dropping a file onto the desk. Kern gave a nod. “I’m listening.” Carter opened the folder. “I went back through the files.
