That’s how long the awkward silences lasted. Three days of barely seeing them except for at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They had been standing outside my bedroom door on their shifts. They were avoiding me, or maybe I was avoiding them. It was hard to tell the difference when it felt like we were all practically trapped here. There was a bit of a loosened leash because of it. Not that I was complaining.

No one questioned when I wandered the halls at odd hours. No one followed me when I went to grab food in between meals. Truth was, I was so unsure of all of it. It was all crazy! I was some mafia heiress, adopted by a man when I was little, whose mother and brother were killed somehow.

My father was now a huge mob boss and had employed men to “keep me safe” my entire life. One I had known as a girl. One had been behind the scenes like the great and powerful Wizard of Oz. The other had come on right before I was eighteen, fucked me, and made me fall in love with him. And now? It was as if they’d collectively decided that after my explosion, I deserved some space to breathe.

Or maybe they were just too busy nursing their wounded egos to give a shit. Either way, I wasn’t about to waste the opportunity. This historic home was huge. I didn’t even know people had houses this large in the historic districts. And it was much larger on the inside than it was on the outside. And there was no reason for it. So many bedrooms. And for what? Guards? Or, I guess as I’d learned since I’d been here, “soldiers”. I didn’t know the difference between soldiers and capos, and they hadn’t allowed me to grab my phone, so I didn’t have Google.

I had no idea what the hell any of this was. And that business room?

There was an entire ballroom full of people there just for me, Sophia Sterling, or at least that’s what my father kept telling me. I knew better. They were there for him. For his status. For his connections. For what their relationship with him meant. He was rich. And I was just a poor little rich girl. I know. Cry me a river, Rich Girl. The champagne flute trembled in my hand, and I watched my fiancé, Marcus, work the crowd. They were here for us. But it didn’t feel like it, at least not to me.

My engagement party. Marcus was having a great time.
