“I can’t put my finger on it.” He tilted his head slightly. “You’ve changed.” I maintained eye contact, fighting the urge to look away. “Living undercover changes everyone. You know that.” “This is different,” he persisted. “You seem… I don’t know. Less anchored somehow.” A dangerous observation. “I’m tired, Burton. This operation is demanding.” “Is that all it is?” Something in his tone made my pulse quicken.

Did he suspect? Had he seen something in my demeanor that gave me away? “What are you implying?” I asked carefully. Burton sighed. “Nothing. Just making sure you’re holding up.” He tapped the folder. “This buys you some time, but not much. We need something concrete on Ivanov himself.

Bank records, recordings, something that will stick in court.” “I’m working on it,” I assured him. “There’s a major shipment coming in next week. Weapons, primarily. Ivanov is handling it personally. I’ll be there.” “That’s what we need,” Burton nodded. “Evidence of Ivanov directly involved in illegal arms trafficking.” “I’ll make it happen,” I promised, the lie bitter on my tongue.

Burton stood to leave, then paused. “Raymond, if things get too complicated, if you feel yourself slipping… there’s no shame in calling for extraction. Better to pull out early than to get in too deep.” Too late for that, I thought. “I’m fine,” I said aloud. “Trust me.” Another lie. I was anything but fine, and trust was the last thing I deserved.

As Burton left, I remained seated, drinking coffee that had grown cold. The weight of my dual betrayal pressed down on me—betraying the FBI by protecting Kirill, betraying Kirill by meeting with Burton at all. No matter what I did, I was a traitor to someone. I was so lost in thought that I didn’t notice the figure sliding into the seat across from me until he spoke.

“Interesting choice of meeting place.” I looked up sharply to find Viktor watching me, his expression unreadable. “What are you doing here?” I asked, fighting to keep my voice level. “Following you,” Viktor answered simply. “Did you really think the Pakhan would let his new favorite wander the city unsupervised?” My mind raced. Had he seen Burton? How long had he been watching?

“I needed coffee,” I said, gesturing to my cup. “And time to think.” “Think about what?” Viktor leaned forward. “About the man who just left, perhaps?” Ice flooded my veins. “What man?” Viktor’s smile was cold. “Please, don’t insult my intelligence. Middle-aged, government haircut, cheap suit. You seemed quite engaged in conversation.” I forced a casual shrug. “Random encounter. Ex-military. We got talking.” “Interesting.”

The second time, I just wiped the blood from my knuckles and ordered another vodka.

By the third time, I felt nothing at all. Six months deep undercover will do that to you. Six months of becoming “Alexei Volkov,” ex-military security specialist with a conveniently spotty background and an eagerness to prove himself. Six months of drinking too much, sleeping too little, and doing increasingly unforgivable things in the name of national security. The FBI had spent years trying to get someone inside the Ivanov operation.

Russian organized crime had evolved—sophisticated money laundering, high-end cybercrime, political influence—while maintaining their traditional brutality. The Ivanovs weren’t just thugs; they were calculating businessmen with Harvard MBAs and trigger fingers. Their Pakhan, Kirill Ivanov, had transformed the organization from street-level muscle into an empire.
