The closer she got to the water, the brighter it became, as if it fed off her presence. Brian walked up to the tall man and whispered something in his ear. Seeing them side by side made Jessica realize just how big this other man was. His face was covered by an all-black mask with no facial features.

The three of them were alone on the dock as the rest of The Withered Tongues remained around the water’s edge, watching. Waiting. The tall man called the attention of the coven members, his voice bellowing out: “My people, join me in welcoming the vessel that we have been in search of. The missing piece brings us what we seek. Tonight’s gathering is the most important in our history, as it will bridge us with Vorathor, making us whole.

It will forge a relationship between Vorathor and Vodyanoy, two of the most powerful entities this universe has ever known,” the man said, turning his attention to Jessica. His eyes were a hazy white, shifting behind the mask. She wanted to meld with the dock or jump into the water and never come back up. And yet…she found a cold strength under his gaze. She knew how important this was—how important she was. “You are here because we chose you.

He chose you. You must understand the importance of this. In a moment, we will bring forward a sacrifice. You will do as I say, following all the instructions, or it will not work as intended. Do you understand?” Jessica nodded slowly. The leader motioned toward the pond. Jessica turned to see two coven members, fully robed and wearing white masks that looked identical to the black mask worn by the tall man.

They held something in their hands. As they got closer, she realized they were gripping large chalices tightly against their bodies, as if whatever each contained was extremely valuable. “What I need you to do now is lie on the dock and face the sky. What we do next will not be comfortable for you, but understand that it will all be worth it, Jessica.”

The two coven members stepped up to her side. Something splashed around within their chalices, giving off a shine that faintly lit their masks. Jessica had no idea what was inside, but she didn’t want it anywhere near her body. Yet, she knew the substance would play a part in what came next. As she tried to see inside one chalice, a commotion came from somewhere behind the dock. Jessica turned and saw two more coven members dragging a young girl toward the pond.

She screamed and tried breaking free. The hooded members ignored and overpowered her. “To obtain power, one must sacrifice. This offering is our sacrifice to the pond. To Vodyanoy. By us giving him something, he gives us something in return. Power. Connection.

After relocating to Newport from Keene to fill the vacancy on the force with Mullin moved up to replace Chief Miller, who died during the Halloween Homecoming Massacre the month before, he never expected things to get worse. But they did. Far worse. Before coming to Newport, Ellis had only come across corpses at the hands of drugs or old age and fired his service weapon once.

Never in a million years did he expect to find himself up to his ass in murders and demon- possessed coven members. After helping Howie Burke and Bethany Carver survive the botched summoning at the hands of Felix Ruger—or Vorathor, if he was acknowledging the demon inside of the wealthy businessman—all he wanted to do was settle down. Let the residents mourn the losses of so many loved ones. Let Howie go back to his mom so they could plan the funeral of Bill Burke after the boy’s father had sacrificed himself to allow his son to live.
