Computeractive – Issue 739 0114 July 2026 – Computeractive

Our usual advice is that you shouldn’t use unsupported devices without taking care to minimise the risks. An outdated operating system – whether that’s on a phone or a computer – might be exposed to vulnerabilities that have emerged since the software was last updated. However, if you keep the amount of time it’s connected to the network to a minimum and avoid keeping too much personal data on your old phone, you should significantly reduce any risks.
With that in mind, we’ve been looking for ways to make use of an old phone. With summer holidays looming, we think we’ve come up with the ideal job: offline navigation. There are two reasons why older phones still make great satnavs. First, the core features that you’ll need – such as their screen and speaker – are often as Download maps on your Android phone You already have a satnav app on your phone, in the shape of Apple Maps on iPhone and Google Maps on Android.
Both of these let you download map data for use later on. On Android, if you don’t already have Google Maps installed, download it from the Google Play Store (www.snipca. com/59192). Open the app then search for the location you’re travelling around (Montepellier, France, in our example). Long-press the screen close to the centre of the area you want to save, then tap ‘More…’
followed by ‘Download offline map’ (see screenshot right). area appears within the shaded borders ( 1 in our screenshot left). You can drag on the screen to recentre it if necessary. Note how big the download is 2 then tap Download 3. You’ll be returned to the screen that opened when you tapped ‘More…’ earlier, while the download continues in the background.
We use snipcas to turn long URLs that are hard to type into ones that are short and simple. They aren’t websites themselves, which means they won’t be recognised if you type them into Google. Instead, you need to type them into your browser address bar, then press Enter. Doing this will take you to the correct website.
