Even when a fire is contained quickly, the protocols are followed, capitalizing on every opportunity to train. Aren followed Sanctity down the main corridor, and he was trailed by Isometre and the others. Their small procession joined a steady stream of women exiting their rooms or workspaces and following the glowing lines stretching before them. Sanctity followed the dark blue line on the ground the AI had assigned them, but it wasn’t going towards the escape pods, Aren saw, but towards the dining facility, and he sighed with relief.

“Lockdown protocol for an onboard fire is seven hours,” Sanctity turned a crooked smile on him when she heard the sigh. “And we’re subject to forced assembly until it’s lifted. They think to delay your duty, Lord Aren, but they mistake my determination.” “But if we’re stuck in the defac with hundreds of others….”

“I’ve always enjoyed having an audience,” Aren almost stumbled at how close Isometre’s voice was. The tall afrik was within arm’s reach behind him and her light brown eyes grew determined as they met Sanctity’s. “They will sabotage nothing. Let the girls go later. I will…” she swallowed hard. “I will have my time with Lord Aren in front of-.” “No,” the tiny cook spoke for the first time. “It will be me.” “What will be her?”

Aren’s question was soft enough that it only reached Sanctity’s ears, but the blonde didn’t answer. Her smile grew as she took in the raven-haired young woman, and she nodded slowly.

tarlight was all Aren could see by when he rose out of the captain’s bed. The tall woman grumbled when he disentangled his limbs from hers, and she rolled back over into the covers, but the First Officer rose with him. Elishta Ramos drew a thin robe about herself as he dressed and poured a steaming cup of coffee for herself. Aren was ready for things to be awkward as he made his exit, but the dark-haired woman brushed a kiss against his cheek and gave him a wink when he cast a final glance back at the captain.

“Zera isn’t a morning person,” her lips quirked into a smirk. “The breeding is complete, but I know she’ll want a… follow up. Think you can fit us into your busy schedule?” “Every day and twice on Sunday,” he said with a grin. She gave a knowing smile before tugging her robe more tightly about herself and letting it conform to her slender body. “Make sure you get some rest. Your days are going to be very…

busy,” with a final wink she slipped back into the captain’s stateroom and Aren was left to find his own way back to his rooms. He didn’t know what to expect in the coming days, but this first one had been a shock. When Aren woke that morning, he never dreamt he’d find himself aboard the Deucalion on a mission to leave the galaxy. The thought of venturing into the dark between galaxies was terrifying. They would be without support. No chance another ship could come and rescue them if there were engine trouble or a hull breach.

A thousand things could go wrong during the years they would spend crossing the void, but he had to trust the engineers. The officers’ quarters had a door guard posted but she lounged in a chair, reading from her datapad. She glanced up lazily when Aren approached and gave a start of surprise when she noticed the young man. Scrambling to her feet the tall, slender woman snapped a crisp salute. “My lord!” “Don’t call me that,” Aren hunched his shoulders in, glancing around at her sharp words but the halls were empty this late in the night.

“I’m not a noble-born on any world, why does everyone keep calling me that?” “You are our lord, sir,” her pretty face softened in confusion. “You’re the only masculine authority aboard. Who else could we turn to?” “Right,” Aren said, He blushed at the reminder and hurried past the tall woman who still held her salute. Only as he was passing her did he realize that the rank assigned to him by the captain put him above her and many of the women aboard. Returning her salute, the woman relaxed, but he saw her building up her courage to speak again and hurried around a corner before she could waylay him.
