Counting The Flames The Flames Duet Book One – Halcie Dawn

Touch it, make sure there’s nothing unusual about it, study it to see if I need to do anything different next time. But the man who realizes he’s in love with the girl in front of him knows he can’t do that. It wouldn’t be right. “You packed it? Just let me know when you start to run out, and I’ll send you more.
You need to massage it into the skin, twice a day, where the staples were. It’ll help with the healing.” “I packed it,” she confirms. Then, she nods at my shoulder. “I didn’t take yours, did I? I mean, you still have some for your shoulder, right? Are you using it?” I can’t help my grin. “Of course, I’m using it. My gran would tan my hide if I didn’t.” She stands up from where she’s sitting beside me on a stone bench—a respectable distance away, I might add—and moves in front of me.
Right in front of me. It takes me by surprise, and I have to straddle my legs wider so I’m not…you know, clenching her hips with my thighs. Talk about fucking inappropriate. “Orah, what are you—” “Show me,” she demands, completely interrupting me. “Let me see your shoulder.” I lift an eyebrow and give her a noncommittal chuckle. “You don’t believe me?”
“I’ll always believe you, Ridge.” I can’t even formulate a response. I don’t deserve the trust and confidence that she puts in me. Fortunately, she’s distracted from paralyzing me with her gaze when a small group of nurses come out the side door, giggling and chattering. I scoot back a little, trying to drag myself out of her magnetic pull. “I can’t whip my shirt off, Orah. We’re surrounded by people.”
She scrunches her nose and gives a barely-there sigh.

Unfortunately, he’s the one boy who’s not supposed to love me. Patient. Friend. Teenager. All words I hate when Ridge says them about me. Deep down, I know he feels the same. There’s an undeniable and irrefutable soul-shattering connection between the two of us. We belong to each other. Destiny marked us as one. Our fate was carved in bullets and blood, in bondage and liberation. But the young firefighter paramedic refuses to cross the lines of his morality. And that’s one of the reasons why I love him.
Because he’s so much more than I ever was or ever will be. My Hero… I suppose I should be grateful for the sky-high boundaries he builds. Why? Because being with me will bring him nothing but pain. Especially when he learns the truth. Because the night he saved me was the night my decisions nearly killed him. Ridge I fell in love with her the night I was supposed to die. Unfortunately for me, she’s the one girl I’m not supposed to love.
Hell, truth be told, I’m not even supposed to like her. Outside of a professional relationship, that is. Why? Because she’s my patient. And young. And impressionable. And traumatized by the mass casualty incident that brought us together. But that doesn’t stop our every line from blurring. Because she’s so much more than just the young woman I saved.
My Brave Girl. My Little Bird… Orah is my destiny.
